A restoration shop owner in Waterloo called us with a problem we hear a lot: he had a number in his head, a wish list twice as long as that number, and no idea which compromise would hurt least. He rebuilds 60s and 70s American iron, and he wanted a hydraulic lift automotive setup that could handle full alignment work on cars with fresh suspension — because a frame-off restoration that pulls to the right is a warranty claim waiting to happen. He also wanted ALI Gold certification on the label, which is the right instinct for the wrong reasons half the time. Here is the decision tree we walked him through, in the order we actually ask the questions.

Step One: Set the Real Budget, Not the Equipment Budget
The first question is never which lift. It is what is the total number you can spend without stalling the project. We separate that number into four buckets before we look at a single model: equipment, freight, electrical, and install. A shop owner who says he has a mid-five-figure budget for an alignment-capable setup is in good shape. A shop owner who says that number is for the lift alone and has not thought about a dedicated circuit, a possible concrete pour, and the alignment machine itself is going to be disappointed in about six weeks.
For alignment specifically there is a second equipment line most people forget: the alignment machine and targets are frequently a bigger investment than the lift holding the car. If the total pot has to cover both, the honest move is often a solid used four-post alignment rack paired with a new imaging aligner rather than a new rack paired with a budget aligner. We told him that plainly. Once we had the split — roughly 40 percent lift, 45 percent aligner, 15 percent infrastructure — the configuration questions got a lot easier to answer, because we were choosing inside a real box instead of dreaming. Every good hydraulic lift automotive decision starts with that box.
Step Two: Four-Post Alignment Rack or Two-Post With Rolling Jacks?
This is the fork in the road. A dedicated four-post alignment rack gives you drive-on convenience, front slip plates, rear slip plates, and a stable platform where the suspension sits loaded exactly the way it does on the road. That is the correct answer for a shop doing alignment as a repeatable revenue line. It also eats floor space permanently and gives you less open access to the underside of the car, which matters when your daily work is media-blasted floor pans and new brake lines.
A two-post with turnplates on the arms is not an alignment lift and we will not sell it as one. But a restoration shop with one bay and mixed work sometimes lands on a two-post plus a separate alignment arrangement, or on a four-post with rolling bridge jacks so you can lift the wheels free for suspension service. Rolling jacks are the compromise that makes a four-post genuinely versatile — without them you are stuck doing brakes and control arms on a drive-on runway with the wheels loaded. He had two bays and enough length to dedicate one. That pointed straight at a four-post alignment configuration, and it took about ten minutes of questions to get there.
Step Three: Capacity, Length, and the Cars You Actually Lift
Restoration guys almost always over-spec capacity and under-spec length. A 1969 Chevelle weighs around 3,600 pounds. A crew-cab shop truck weighs 7,000. A 12,000-pound-capacity four-post covers both with margin to spare, and jumping to 14,000 or 18,000 buys you nothing except a bigger footprint and a bigger bill — unless you plan on medium-duty trucks, in which case say so up front.
Length and wheelbase range are where people get burned. An alignment rack has a usable wheelbase window, and long-wheelbase 70s wagons and dually pickups sit at the far end of it. We ask for the longest and shortest vehicle you expect to align, then we check the runway length and the rear slip plate travel against both. His longest was a 1973 Suburban and his shortest was an Alfa Spider, which is an unusually wide spread. That spread ruled out one shorter rack immediately. We also check drive-up height, because a restored car with a two-inch drop and no front air dam clearance will scrape an approach ramp that a stock pickup rolls over without noticing. Getting the geometry right is more important to a working hydraulic lift automotive installation than any spec on the brochure.
Step Four: What ALI Gold Certification Actually Means
He asked for ALI Gold by name, and he was right to, but the label means something narrower than most people assume. The Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party certification program where a lift model is tested to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard and then periodically re-audited. A Gold label means that specific model, in that specific configuration, was independently validated for load capacity, structural integrity, and safety features — not that the brand as a whole is certified. Brands sell certified and uncertified models side by side, and the gold-and-blue label on the column is how you know which one you got.
Why it matters practically: insurance carriers and OSHA-conscious commercial shops increasingly ask for it, alignment equipment manufacturers may reference it, and if you ever have a liability event the certification is documentation you want. It also correlates with real build quality — the testing is not trivial to pass. What it does not mean is that an uncertified lift is unsafe, or that a certified lift installed on bad concrete by an untrained crew is safe. Certification covers the machine, not the installation. Both Rotary and Challenger offer ALI-certified models in the configurations we recommended to him, so it cost him nothing to insist on it. Step Five: Concrete, Power, and the Waterloo Building Problem
His shop is a converted implement dealership with a slab of unknown vintage, which describes about a third of the buildings we work in across northeast Iowa. Four-post lifts are gentler on concrete than two-posts because the load is spread over four base plates rather than concentrated at two anchored columns, and many four-post models can sit unanchored per manufacturer instructions. That is a real advantage in an old building. Alignment racks, however, need to be level and shimmed precisely, because your alignment readings are only as trustworthy as the plane the car is sitting on.
We shot his floor and found just over three-quarters of an inch of variation across the runway footprint. That is fixable with shims but it has to be documented and it has to be checked again after the first month of use. Power was straightforward — a single-phase 220V circuit at the power unit end — but his panel needed a dedicated breaker and a run of conduit. None of this is exotic. It is just work that has to happen before the freight arrives, not after. Step Six: Service Life, Parts, and What Goes Wrong First
The last branch of the tree is the one people skip: who fixes it in year seven. We take a steady stream of calls that all sound the same — the lift will not go up or down, the pump is bypassing, the lower valve seems stuck. On a hydraulic lift automotive system those symptoms usually trace to three things: air or contaminated fluid in the system, a worn cylinder seal letting pressure bypass internally, or a stuck solenoid on the lowering valve. A cylinder that leaks internally will hold a car for a minute and then creep down, which is exactly the scenario that puts a vehicle stuck in the air.
We had a caller from out of state with a leaking ram on a four-post who already had the seal kit in hand and just needed somebody who knew the rebuild sequence. That is the position you want to be in — parts available, procedure known, downtime measured in hours. It is also why we push people toward brands with real parts pipelines.
