A collector outside Iowa City called us in February about a hydraulic lift automotive install for a detached shop he had just finished. He keeps six vehicles — a couple of British roadsters, a first-gen Bronco, a pair of muscle cars, and a daily driver — and what he actually wanted was room to work under an exhaust system without lying on a creeper in a cold building. Simple enough request. It turned into a four-month project because of one thing he had not thought about: the slab. This is the story of that first year, from the day we cored his concrete through the first real service call eleven months later, and what we would tell anyone in the same position.

The Slab Conversation Nobody Wants to Have
His shop was two years old and the concrete looked beautiful. Broom finish, clean control joints, no cracking. That tells you nothing about what is underneath. We cored two test holes and found four inches of concrete over compacted fill, with wire mesh rather than rebar, and no thickened pad under either bay. For a two-post, that is a hard stop. A two-post concentrates the entire vehicle load and a substantial overturning moment into eight to twelve anchors in a small footprint, and four inches of unreinforced slab will not hold it. We have seen anchors pull cones of concrete out of thin floors, and it is not a slow, warning-filled failure.
The manufacturer specs for most 10,000 lb two-posts call for a minimum of four to four and a quarter inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and honestly we prefer six inches with proper reinforcement for anything a homeowner is going to load a heavy truck onto. Rebar matters more than mesh because it keeps a cracked slab acting as one piece. His options were to saw-cut and pour reinforced pads under each column, which meant demolition inside a finished building, or to change the configuration entirely. He chose the second path, and it turned out to be the better one for how he actually uses the space.
Why a Four-Post Won for This Collector
A four-post distributes load through four base plates over a much larger footprint, and most models do not require anchoring at all in a home setting — many are designed to sit free-standing on a level slab. That single fact removed the concrete problem. He still needed the floor to be flat and sound, which it was, but he no longer needed engineered pads with rebar cages under each post. For a collector, the four-post also solves the problem he did not know he had: storage. Six vehicles in a two-bay shop only works if some of them stack.
The tradeoff is access. A four-post puts runways under the tires, which is fine for exhaust work along the center of the vehicle and excellent for driveline, transmission, and transfer case access, but it blocks wheels-off jobs unless you add rolling jacks. He added a pair. With the jacks he can lift a corner or an axle off the runway and get to brakes, suspension, and wheel bearings. For the kind of work a collector does — dropping a driveshaft to change U-joints, chasing an exhaust leak at the manifold collector, pulling a gas tank on a roadster — the hydraulic lift automotive setup he ended up with covers nearly everything. The only jobs it does not love are full suspension teardowns where you want completely unobstructed access under the rockers.
Install Day and the Ceiling Height Surprise
Install took most of a day. Two of us, a forklift to unload, runways positioned, columns squared and leveled with shims, cables routed and tensioned, power unit mounted, hydraulic line run and bled, then a full cycle test with weight on it. The cable tensioning is where four-posts get finicky — all four have to be equal or the runways rack slightly and the lock latches will not engage evenly. We spend more time on that than on anything else.
The surprise was ceiling height. His shop had twelve-foot walls, which sounds generous until you stack a lifted Bronco on top of a lift. Rise height plus vehicle height plus the runway thickness is the real number, and lights, garage door tracks, and an unlucky roof truss all live in that space. We ended up relocating two LED fixtures and shortening the maximum rise setting so the tallest vehicle could not contact the ceiling. This is the most common planning miss we see on home installs. Measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction, not to the peak of the roof, and then subtract the tallest vehicle you ever intend to park up there. If the math does not work, a mid-rise or a lower-profile hydraulic lift automotive option may be a better fit than forcing it.
Exhaust and Driveline Access in Practice
Three weeks after install he sent us photos of a roadster up at full height with the exhaust dropped. That is the whole point. Working a full exhaust system on jack stands means crawling, sliding, and dropping hangers on your face. At chest height with a light overhead, the same job takes a third of the time and you can actually see the flange alignment. The runways on a four-post give you a solid place to set tools and a straight sight line down the tunnel, which matters when you are aligning a driveshaft or checking pinion angle after a spring change.
Driveline work is where four-posts genuinely outperform two-posts for a collector. With the wheels loaded on the runways, the suspension sits at ride height, which means U-joint angles, driveshaft phasing, and transmission mount clearance are all in their real working positions. On a two-post the suspension hangs at full droop and your angles are wrong. He rebuilt the rear of the Bronco that summer and told us he never would have caught a bent driveshaft yoke without seeing it loaded. For exhaust fabrication the same logic applies — you want the pipe routed against a chassis that is sitting the way it sits on the road.
The First Service Call: Slow Drift
Eleven months in, he called because the lift was drifting down. Parked overnight at working height, it would settle two or three inches by morning. That symptom has a short list of causes and we walk shops through it constantly. First check the lowering valve for debris holding it slightly open. Second, check the hydraulic line and fittings for external weep. Third, and most likely on a unit that has cycled a few hundred times, the cylinder is bypassing internally — piston seals letting fluid slip past under load.
His was the third one, which surprised him at under a year. It happens. A nick on the rod, contamination in the fluid from install, or a seal that got pinched at the factory will all produce internal bypass early. We shipped a seal kit, walked him through pulling the cylinder and reassembling it, and he had the lift back in service that weekend. We take this exact call from commercial shops too — a Florida four-post owner described the identical symptom last year, ram leaking internally and bypassing, seal kit already on the bench. Year-One Maintenance That Actually Matters
For a home shop that cycles a lift a few times a week, maintenance is light but not optional. Check the fluid level monthly and top with the correct hydraulic oil — not automatic transmission fluid, whatever the internet says about a lift somebody’s uncle ran for thirty years. Look at all four cables for broken strands, corrosion, or uneven tension every few months. Cycle the safety locks and listen for all four engaging together. Wipe the cylinder rod. Look under the power unit for weeping fittings. That is a fifteen-minute job.
Once a year, do a real inspection: torque check on any anchors if the unit is anchored, cable tension adjustment, lock ladder wear, and a load test at full height. Iowa shops that go unheated all winter should also pay attention to condensation in the reservoir, because water in the fluid is what eventually pits a cylinder bore.
