A home car lift for garage restoration and metal work is one of the most common calls we get from small-fleet operators — folks with three or four service trucks, some project vehicles, and a shop building that could go either way on lift configuration. A fleet operator in Marion emailed us last spring asking us to compare two configurations side by side. Auto Lift Services quoted both and did the site survey before he committed. This is the comparison we ran, laid out the way we ran it — measurement by measurement, cost by cost, workflow by workflow.

The Fleet Owner Building a Restoration Bay

He ran a small landscaping and hauling fleet — a few pickups, a couple of trailers, a skid steer — and did his own maintenance on the trucks. On the side, he was restoring a 70s pickup that had been in the family. His shop was a 40×60 pole barn with 14-foot side walls and a six-inch slab poured three years ago. He wanted a home car lift for garage restoration work and fleet service both — one lift to do everything he needed. That is not always possible, and part of our job was telling him honestly which configuration would compromise least. We narrowed to two: a two-post asymmetric at 10K, and a four-post storage at 8K with a bridge jack. Then we ran the comparison.

Site Survey — What We Actually Check

Before we quote an install we do a phone site survey and, for larger projects, drive out. The list: ceiling height (measure to lowest obstruction, not to peak); slab thickness (verify with an anchor test-hole or a coring); slab age (green concrete is a hard no); door opening dimensions; column-anchor clearance from walls and posts; electrical (panel location, available circuits); and drive-in path (can we get a lift crate through the door with a pallet jack). His answers: 14 feet clear to the truss, six-inch slab three years old, 14-foot roll-up door, 200-amp subpanel already in the shop with two open double-pole slots, straight-shot drive-in from an 8-foot side door. Everything green.

Configuration A: Two-Post Asymmetric at 10K

The two-post gives him full undercarriage access, which matters for restoration metal work — sheet-metal patches on floor pans, exhaust work, undercoating, transmission tunnel access. On his 70s pickup, that access is the difference between a job that takes an afternoon and a job that takes three weekends on jack stands. Two-post at 10K also handles his three-quarter-ton fleet trucks with margin. Downsides: he cannot store a vehicle on it. If the restoration truck sits for weeks between projects, it either sits on the floor (taking space) or on jack stands beside the lift. For a working shop where the lift is used most days, that is fine. For a shop where the lift sits idle half the time, it is wasted capacity.

Configuration B: Four-Post Storage at 8K with Bridge Jack

The four-post with a bridge jack accessory is the closest thing to a do-everything home lift. The runways store a vehicle easily. When he needs to work under it, the bridge jack lifts the wheels off the runways and gives him partial undercarriage access. Downsides: partial is not full. The runways still block access to the middle of the underbody. For engine drops, transmission work, or long metal repairs, a four-post with bridge jack is compromised. For fluid changes, brake work, and general fleet PM, it is fine. The other downside was capacity: at 8K, his heaviest fleet truck was near the limit; a 9K or 10K four-post is available and would have been a better spec if he went this route.

Slab, Anchors, and Cure Time

His slab was excellent for either lift: six inches, three years old, no cracks in the anchor zones. Two-post installs need four-inch minimum for most 10K models — six inches gives comfortable margin and lets us hit deeper anchors. Four-post installs are actually easier on concrete because the load is distributed across four columns instead of two, and the column base plates spread the load further. Cure time matters — we do not anchor into slabs less than 28 days old, and we prefer 90 days. His three-year slab was far past that. If your slab is less than a month old, wait or pour a thicker one in the lift zone.

Electrical, Air, and Compressor Reach

Both lift configurations run on 220V single-phase with a 30-amp double-pole breaker, so his electrical setup did not change between the two options. His compressor was in the far corner of the shop, and we recommended running a hard-piped air line to a manifold near the lift base regardless of which lift he picked — restoration work needs air tools constantly, and running a hose across the shop floor gets old fast. The manifold job was straightforward on his existing infrastructure.

Which One We’d Put in a Marion Restoration Shop

For his specific mix — restoration work as the primary use, fleet service as the secondary use, and no need to store a vehicle long-term — we recommended the two-post asymmetric at 10K. Full underbody access won. If his mix had been reversed — mostly fleet PM, occasional restoration, and a project truck that needed to sit for six months at a time — we would have recommended the four-post at 9K or 10K with a bridge jack.
