Why fleet CV axle work needs a scissor, not a jack stand
CV axle and half-shaft replacement is a wheels-off job by definition. The axle nut is torqued in the two hundred pound-foot range on most light-duty vehicles, and once it is broken loose the axle has to slide out through the hub. Working that job on jack stands means a tech is on the floor, on his back, at head height with a suspended assembly. Even with proper stands and chocks the safety exposure is significant, and the ergonomic cost across a full fleet year is worse — sore backs, longer bay times, and lower first-pass yield.
A scissor lift for automotive CV work puts the whole assembly at chest height with the wheels dangling free. The tech stands upright. The lock interval is the safety story
Scissor lifts hold vehicles at height with mechanical locks, not hydraulics. Hydraulics raise the vehicle; locks hold it. On a good commercial scissor the lock interval is roughly every two to two and a half inches through the travel. That means the tech can drop the vehicle to any working height and set it on a hard mechanical stop before starting the axle nut.
That interval matters more than most fleet buyers realize. A lift with locks only every foot forces the tech to work at whatever height the closest lock lands on, not the height that is best for the job. On a CV axle replacement the sweet spot for the tech is having the hub at roughly forty inches — chest height — with the axle at his shoulder. A two-inch lock interval lets him hit that number exactly. A cheap scissor with fewer positions does not. Every time so far, the answer has been the finer interval.
Duty cycle: fleet garages are not shade-tree garages
