Choosing a scissor lift for automotive restoration is a different exercise than choosing one for oil changes, and a mobile mechanic near Davenport proved it to us last year. He had spent six years working out of a service van — brakes, diagnostics, roadside — and was finally leasing a small bay to take on the metal and body work he actually enjoys. He needed access to rockers, floor pans, and frame rails, he needed it at a height he could weld at comfortably, and he had a low ceiling and a landlord who would not let him anchor anything he could not remove. Restoration Work Has Different Access Requirements

A mechanic doing routine service wants the vehicle as high as possible and the wheels hanging free. A restorer wants something else entirely. When you are cutting out a rusted rocker panel and welding in new metal, you want the sill at roughly chest height so you can see your weld puddle and hold the gun steady without a mirror or a contortion. Too high and you are welding overhead with slag falling on you. Too low and your back is finished by lunch.

That means the height range and the lock spacing matter more than the maximum lift height. Our Davenport customer specifically asked whether it was all-the-way-down or all-the-way-up — a question we get constantly — and the answer on a good unit is neither. The locking ladder engages roughly every two to two and a half inches through the travel, so you can park the deck exactly where the work is. For a floor pan replacement he sets it high. For rocker and quarter panel work he sets it low. For a door skin he barely raises it at all. That flexibility is the whole argument for this style of machine in a body shop context, and it is why a scissor lift for automotive restoration often beats a two-post for the same money even when the two-post has better wheels-free access on paper.

The Ceiling Problem Every Leased Bay Has

His bay had a hair under eleven feet of clear ceiling with a garage door track and a run of conduit eating into that. A two-post overhead is out. A floorplate two-post was theoretically possible but he did not want a bar across the floor to trip over while dragging a welding lead and a grinder cord across the bay all day. That is not a small consideration when you are working alone and moving around a car for eight hours.

A scissor solves the ceiling problem by definition — nothing goes above the vehicle. The tradeoff is that on a full-rise unit you still need enough clearance for the roof of a tall vehicle at full extension, so we ran the math: a mid-height sedan at max lift put him about eighteen inches from the conduit. Anything taller than a crossover would need to stop short of full travel, which the lock ladder handles fine. We also talked about the floor. The slab was original to a building from the late seventies and had a visible crack running diagonally through the bay. We drilled test holes, found solid material at proper depth on both sides of the crack, and set the anchor pattern to avoid crossing it. That is a judgment call we make on site and one of the reasons we do not love shipping a machine to someone and wishing them luck.

Brand History Matters More Than the Spec Sheet

He came to us with a printout from an online marketplace showing a scissor with impressive numbers at a price that seemed too good. It was — the brand had existed for about four years under a name that did not appear anywhere in the industry before that, and the same machine appeared under three other house labels with different colors. We were not going to tell him it would collapse. We told him something more practical: in eight years, when a cylinder seal goes or a cable stretches, there will be nobody to call and no part number to cross-reference.

We have lived this. We regularly get calls about leaking cylinders on units sold by brands that changed hands twice or vanished. Sometimes we can rebuild the cylinder locally, which is a real service and often the cheapest path. Sometimes the seal profile is metric-odd and we are having something made. That is a two-to-four-week delay on a machine that is your income. What the Parts Pipeline Actually Looks Like

People assume parts availability is a yes-or-no thing. It is a spectrum. At the good end, we can pull a hydraulic cylinder, a cable set, a lock dog, or a power unit for a mainstream brand off the shelf in Ames or have it in a few days from a regional warehouse. In the middle sit brands with real support but longer lead times or distributors who only ship to dealers — workable, but plan ahead. At the bad end are machines assembled overseas for a single importer who has since moved on.

The wear items on a scissor are predictable and worth knowing before you buy. Hydraulic cylinders and their seals are number one — a slow leak or a deck that settles overnight almost always traces back there. Equalizer cables come next, especially in a salt climate. Then lock dogs, solenoids, and the power unit itself. Air lines for the lock release are cheap and easy. If you can get all of those for a given machine, you own something serviceable for twenty years. If you can only get two of the five, you own a machine with an expiration date. We tell every customer to photograph the data plate the day the unit is installed and save it somewhere they will find it, because half our parts calls begin with somebody standing in a shop trying to read a faded sticker. Install Day and the First Month

Delivery went smoothly, mostly because he did the prep we asked for. Power was already run to the corner. The bay was empty. He had confirmed with his landlord in writing that anchoring was permitted with the understanding that holes would be patched at lease end — a conversation we push every leased-space customer to have before the truck rolls, because we have had installs stopped on the driveway over exactly that issue.

We set the unit, leveled the platforms, bled the system, and ran a dozen unloaded cycles followed by loaded cycles with his own truck. Then we spent twenty minutes on the part most installers skip: showing him the daily walk-around. Look at the cables. Look for fluid on the floor under the power unit. Listen for the locks engaging on the way up and count them on both sides. Never work under it without the locks set. He picked it up fast, because a mobile mechanic who has spent six years working on his back in gravel driveways has a healthy respect for anything holding a car over his head. A month in he reported one issue — a lock that engaged a half-beat late on one side — which turned out to be an air line fitting that needed a quarter turn. Five-minute fix, and exactly the kind of thing a walk-around catches early.

The Economics for a One-Man Shop

He asked the question everybody asks: how long until this pays for itself. For restoration work the math is not really about billable hours saved on any single job — it is about which jobs you can accept at all. He had been turning down rust repair because he could not do quality floor pan work on jack stands, and rust repair in the Quad Cities is steady, year-round, and priced well because so few shops want it.

Installed cost for a quality mid-range unit with delivery, anchoring, and startup typically lands in the mid four figures, with full-rise models and heavier capacities pushing higher. Against a two-post of similar quality it is often comparable or modestly more, and against the hassle of relocating to a building with taller ceilings it is not close. The lifespan is the real number: a well-maintained machine from a brand with a parts pipeline runs twenty years or more. Spread across that, a scissor lift for automotive restoration is one of the cheapest pieces of capital equipment in a body shop. What kills the math is buying an orphan brand and replacing it in year seven. That is the entire argument we make to every customer, and it is why we would rather sell you something boring and supportable than something impressive and disposable. What We Would Tell the Next Mobile Mechanic

If you are making the same transition — van to bay, service to restoration — a few things are worth locking down before you shop. Measure your true clear ceiling height, not the height at the peak. Measure it at the garage door track and at the lowest conduit or light fixture, because those are what you will actually hit. Know your slab thickness or plan on paying us to core a test hole, which takes ten minutes and prevents a very bad day.

Then think honestly about vehicle mix. If everything you touch is a passenger car or light truck under 7,000 lb, you do not need a 12,000 lb machine and you should not pay for one. If you occasionally do a three-quarter-ton, size up. Think about platform length against your longest vehicle and about whether you want wheels-free capability from bridge jacks — for metal work you often do not, since you want the suspension loaded and the body sitting in its normal geometry while you weld. That last point surprises people. A restorer is frequently better served by drive-on decks than by wheels-free access, which flips the usual advice on its head. Getting that decision right at purchase is worth more than any discount, and it is the conversation we would rather have with you before you buy than after.
