Why He Landed on a Scissor Instead of a Two-Post
His first instinct was a two-post, and honestly that is where we start most home-garage conversations. A two-post is usually the cheaper way to get a vehicle in the air, it gives you wide-open wheel access, and it has been the shop standard for fifty years. But he had two constraints working against it. First, he wanted the middle of that bay usable when the lift was not in service — a two-post plants two columns permanently in your floor plan. Second, he wanted the option to store one car up and park another underneath, which meant a lift that could park at a variety of heights rather than just all-the-way-down or all-the-way-up.
That second point surprised him. People assume a scissor is binary. It is not. The mechanical locks on a full-rise unit engage roughly every two to two and a half inches through the travel, so you click it in wherever you want and it stays there. If you have two low-slung cars, you set the deck at knee height and gain clearance without giving up headroom. That flexibility is what sold him. We were straight with him about the tradeoff, too: a scissor lift for automotive service costs more than a comparable two-post for the same capacity, and wheel access is limited unless you step up to an open-center or wheels-free model. Sizing Capacity for a Collector’s Rotation, Not One Car
He told us seven thousand pounds, which is what almost every homeowner says. Passenger cars run three to five thousand, so seven feels like a comfortable cushion. The problem is that collectors do not own one car forever. Over the first year he added a three-quarter-ton pickup to the rotation, and that truck with a full tank and a toolbox in the bed lives closer to seven thousand than he expected. We always push people one tier up from their current fleet for exactly this reason. The price delta between a 7,000 lb and a 9,000 lb platform is real but modest compared to buying the wrong lift twice.
Capacity is only half of sizing, though. Runway length matters more than most first-time buyers realize. A short-deck scissor sized for sedans will leave a long-wheelbase truck with overhang at both ends, which changes where the load sits relative to the lift points and makes the whole thing feel tippy even when it is technically within spec. We also look at collapsed height, because drive-over clearance is the number that decides whether a lowered sports car can get onto the deck at all. Some full-rise units sit under four inches collapsed; others need ramps that add length you may not have. Freight: What Actually Shows Up in Your Driveway
This is the part nobody plans for. A full-rise scissor ships as a crated assembly on a pallet, and depending on model that crate runs 1,800 to 2,800 pounds. It moves on an LTL common carrier, and unless you pay for it specifically, that truck arrives without a liftgate. Even with a liftgate, most are rated well under the weight of a lift crate. So the practical reality is curbside delivery off the back of a trailer, and getting it from the trailer deck to your garage floor is your problem.
We told the Ankeny customer to line up a forklift before the truck was ever dispatched, and he did — a neighbor with a small farm operation brought over a rough-terrain machine with forks long enough to reach under the pallet. That is the ideal setup. Second best is a skid loader with pallet forks, which most rural and suburban Iowa customers can borrow or rent for half a day. What does not work is four guys, an engine hoist, and optimism. We have seen crates dropped, decks bent, and cylinders damaged in the first thirty minutes of ownership. Also worth knowing: LTL drivers usually give a two to four hour window and will not wait. If your equipment is not on site when the truck is, you are looking at a redelivery fee or a return to terminal. Slab, Anchors, and the 30×40 Pole Building Question
Half the scissor inquiries we get in central Iowa come from pole buildings — the classic 30×40 with twelve-foot sidewalls and a floor poured by whoever was available that summer. Most full-rise scissor models want four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, and many spec more. The trouble is that nobody remembers what they poured, and pole barn slabs vary wildly in thickness and reinforcement across a single building. Before we bolt anything down, we core-test or at minimum drill test holes to confirm depth and look for fiber or rebar.
If the slab is thin, the fix is not complicated: cut out a section, pour a proper reinforced pad to the manufacturer’s footprint spec, let it cure the full 28 days, then anchor. That adds a few weeks and a modest cost, and it is dramatically cheaper than remediating a lift that tore anchors loose under load. Expansion joints and control cracks matter too — you do not want an anchor sitting within a few inches of a joint. Install Day and the Power Question
Installation on a full-rise scissor is faster than a two-post in some ways and fussier in others. There is no column plumb to fight, no overhead crossbar to align, and no cable routing through sheaves. What you do have is a power unit that needs to be positioned, hydraulic lines that need to be routed and bled, and a deck that has to be shimmed dead level in both directions before the anchors go in tight. Level matters more on a scissor than people expect, because an out-of-level deck loads the scissor arms unevenly and you will feel it as a chatter or a hitch on the way up.
Power is where homeowners get stuck. Most residential-grade units run on 220 volt single phase, and the vast majority of Iowa garages and pole buildings do not have a 220 circuit sitting where the power unit needs to be. Budget for an electrician. It is usually a straightforward run from the panel, but in a pole building with the panel on the opposite wall it can mean sixty feet of conduit. We tell people to have the circuit in place before install day so we are not making a second trip. After the anchors are torqued, we cycle the lift through its full travel a dozen times empty, verify every mechanical lock engages, bleed the system again, then load-test with an actual vehicle. That whole process takes a few hours for most units.
The First Real Job: That Oil Pan Gasket
Six weeks after install he finally tackled the oil pan gasket. This is a job that punishes you on jack stands — you are on your back, the pan is fighting you, and the crossmember is always in the way of the last two bolts. On a lift at chest height it becomes a pleasant afternoon. He reported back that the biggest difference was not the height, it was that he could raise and lower the car mid-job to change working angles, which you simply cannot do on stands.
One thing he did learn the hard way: on a solid-deck scissor, the deck is directly under the middle of the car, and that is exactly where the oil pan is. Draining meant threading a pan between the deck edge and the frame rail, and he ended up with more oil on the deck than he wanted. Wheels-free and open-center scissor designs solve this; solid decks do not. We now bring this up in every conversation where somebody names underbody fluid work as their primary use case. It does not mean a solid deck is wrong — plenty of folks run one happily for years — but you should know it going in. He also discovered that a rolling stool and a good drop light matter as much as the lift itself. First-year verdict from him: he would buy the same lift again, but he would spend the extra on the open-center version.
Twelve Months In: Maintenance, Wear, and What We Watch
A scissor lift for automotive use has fewer wear items than a cable-driven lift, which is one of its quiet advantages. No lifting cables to stretch or fray, no sheaves to seize, no equalization to chase. What you do have is a hydraulic system, pivot pins and bushings at every scissor joint, and a set of mechanical locks. All three want attention on a schedule.
At the twelve-month mark we went back out for a service visit. Fluid level was down slightly, which is normal as the system settles and air works out. We greased every pivot point, inspected the locks for wear on the engagement faces, checked anchor torque, and looked hard at the hose routing for chafe points where the deck travels. Everything was clean. The one item we flagged was surface rust starting on the underside of the deck where the epoxy floor holds moisture — an Iowa humidity issue more than a lift issue, easily handled with a wire brush and paint. Our general recommendation for a home-garage scissor is a homeowner visual inspection monthly, a grease and fluid check every six months, and a professional inspection annually.
