Those three answers build a decision tree that narrows the field fast. If your ceiling is under 12 feet and you’re working on classic trucks and cars for the seasonal storage rush, a low-profile two-post or a mid-rise scissor often makes more sense than a tall four-post that eats headroom you don’t have. If you’re clearing a full 3/4-ton diesel with a topper or job box, the math changes — you need a taller column and a higher weight rating, and that pushes the price up.

We tell every shop owner the same thing: don’t pick the lift first and the budget second, because you’ll end up compromising on the wrong thing. Two-post lifts are faster to load and unload and take up less floor footprint, which some shops prefer if they’re rotating vehicles constantly rather than parking them long-term. Two-post lifts give you full underbody access, which matters a lot for restoration and undercarriage work, and they take less floor space when not in use since the arms swing clear. Four-post lifts are faster to drive onto without positioning arms, offer a stable platform for long-term storage, and can often be moved on casters if you need flexibility in a shop that changes layout seasonally.

For a shop doing genuine frame and undercarriage restoration work, we usually lean two-post unless ceiling height or floor condition rules it out. For a shop where storage during the off-season is just as important as the wrenching, a four-post earns its keep by giving you a flat deck to park on without arms in the way. Either way, buy based on what you do most of the year, not what looks most versatile on paper.
