Truck lifts and accessories are usually the last thing a vehicle collector budgets for and the first thing they wish they’d installed sooner once the metal work starts. We walked one east-central Iowa collector through exactly that lesson over the course of a single year — from an empty pole barn to a fully sequenced restoration garage with a lift doing daily work. Starting With the Building, Not the Lift

When this collector first called us, the conversation wasn’t really about truck lifts and accessories at all — it was about a pole barn with no concrete plan and a growing collection of project trucks that needed real restoration and metal work done somewhere other than gravel. We told him what we tell every collector at this stage: the lift is the easy part of the decision. The building around it is what determines whether the lift performs for fifteen years or becomes a maintenance headache in three. Slab thickness, rebar placement, and curing time all needed to be locked in months before any equipment showed up.

He’d assumed he could pour a standard 4-inch slab and call it done. We walked him through why restoration and metal work — grinding, welding, panel replacement — puts different demands on a shop floor than routine oil changes, both in terms of lift anchor points and in terms of floor durability under sparks and dropped tools. We sequenced the concrete work first, with conduit and anchor bolt locations planned around where the lift would eventually sit, well before he ordered anything from us.

Sequencing Electrical and Air Before the Lift Arrives

The second mistake we see collectors make — and one we caught early here — is treating power and air supply as an afterthought once the lift shows up. A two-post or four-post lift needs a dedicated circuit sized correctly for the motor, and a restoration garage doing metal work also needs compressed air lines run to multiple points around the bay for sanders, cutoff tools, and paint prep equipment. We had the electrician and the concrete crew coordinate schedules so conduit went in before the slab cured, instead of surface-mounting everything after the fact.

This sequencing saved real money. Cutting into finished concrete to add a missing circuit or air line after a lift is installed is expensive and disruptive, and it’s one of the most common regrets we hear from collectors who built out a garage without professional input. By the time truck lifts and accessories actually arrived on a truck, the bay had power, air, and lighting exactly where they needed to be, and installation took a single day instead of stretching into a multi-week project full of change orders.

Choosing a Lift Built for Metal Work, Not Just Oil Changes

Restoration work puts a truck up on a lift for hours or days at a time, not the twenty minutes of a typical service bay job. That changes what matters in a lift. Arm reach and configuration needed to clear full-length rocker panels and frame rails without interference, since panel replacement and rust repair often require access along the entire underside of the vehicle. We also prioritized a rise height tall enough that our collector could stand fully upright while welding or grinding underneath for extended stretches, rather than the more modest rise height that’s fine for a quick fluid change but miserable for a full afternoon of work.

We steered him toward a two-post configuration with adjustable arms rather than a fixed four-post platform, since restoration work often means removing wheels, suspension components, and sometimes the frame itself — access that a drive-on four-post lift doesn’t give you as easily. For a collector working on one vehicle at a time rather than running high volume through multiple bays, that flexibility mattered more than the storage convenience a four-post setup offers.

Accessories That Matter for Restoration, Not Just Routine Service

Once the lift itself was decided, the accessory list looked different from what we’d spec for a typical service shop. Rolling jack trays that could support a truck at multiple points while a technician worked on suspension or frame components came first, since restoration work often means the vehicle needs to be supported at more than one location simultaneously while components are removed. LED lighting mounted directly to the lift columns mattered too, since metal work and panel fitting require better visibility than a single shop light overhead.

We also added component trays and magnetic parts bins mounted to the lift structure itself, since restoration jobs generate far more small hardware than a routine service call, and losing track of fasteners on a multi-week project is a real cost in time. None of these accessories are unique to collectors, but the priority order changes completely once you’re doing sustained metal work instead of quick service turnarounds.

The First Service Call: What a Year of Real Use Reveals

About a year in, we got the call every lift owner eventually makes — a slightly slower descent, a faint noise on the way up. This is normal, and it’s exactly the kind of thing a first-year service visit is designed to catch before it becomes a bigger problem. We inspected cables, checked hydraulic fluid levels, and verified arm restraint function, and found nothing alarming, just normal wear consistent with a year of restoration-intensity use rather than light residential use.

This is where we always tell collectors the truth: a lift used for hours-long metal work sessions wears differently than one used for quick oil changes, and a first-year checkup catches that difference early. We adjusted a cable tension slightly and confirmed all safety locks were engaging properly before we left. That single visit is often the difference between a lift that lasts fifteen-plus years and one that develops expensive problems because early wear signs went unnoticed.

Why Build-Out Sequencing Is the Real Lesson Here

Looking back at this collector’s first year, the truck lifts and accessories themselves performed exactly as expected — the real variable was always the sequencing around them. Concrete before conduit before lift delivery. Power and air planned before the equipment showed up rather than retrofitted afterward. Accessories chosen for the actual work being done, not a generic list. And a first-year service call scheduled proactively instead of reactively.
