Myth: Mobile Columns Can’t Hold Alignment-Grade Level

This is the myth we hear most from shop owners who’ve only used older mobile column technology. Early wireless column sets from a decade ago did drift slightly between columns during a lift cycle, which made touchy alignment work a gamble. Modern synced systems solve that with real-time height matching across every column in the set, keeping the vehicle level within a fraction of an inch throughout the full range of travel. Myth: All Mobile Columns Are Interchangeable Across Brands

Shop owners often assume they can mix and match columns from different manufacturers or model years to build out a larger set, but synced column systems are engineered to communicate with matched units only. For an EV shop doing alignment work on sedans, crossovers, and light trucks, a properly sized mobile column set is often a better fit than a heavy-duty truck-rated column system, since the lighter-duty columns are easier to maneuver into position and typically move faster per lift cycle. Buying more capacity than the shop’s actual vehicle mix needs just adds cost and slows down every job.

Myth: Once Installed, Mobile Columns Don’t Need a Site Survey

Because mobile columns don’t require anchoring like a fixed 2-post lift, some shops skip the site survey altogether and assume any flat-looking floor will do. Floor condition still matters enormously for alignment accuracy — cracked or spalling concrete under a column’s base plate can cause a column to settle slightly during a long alignment job, throwing off readings mid-service. We always walk the floor with a level and a straightedge before recommending a mobile column layout, even though there’s no drilling or anchoring involved.
