The Setup: A Pole Building Full of Overland Builds
This particular shop had three rigs in various stages of a build — one lifted truck ready for a trip, one mid-build with a suspension swap in progress, and one waiting on tires. Floor space was the bottleneck, not tools or skill. The owner wanted vehicle storage lifts that could hold a finished truck overhead, safely and long-term, while the ground level stayed open for active work, including regular tire rotation and wheel swaps on whichever rig needed it that week.
We measured actual vehicle weights before recommending anything, because overland trucks are rarely stock weight. Aftermarket bumpers, winches, roof top tents, and a full complement of recovery gear can add well over a thousand pounds to a truck that looks like a normal half-ton on paper. Getting that number right before choosing a lift is the difference between a storage lift that holds up for a decade and one that’s overloaded from day one.
Why Hydraulic Seal Quality Is the Detail Most People Skip
Most people shopping for vehicle storage lifts focus on the frame and the weight rating and never ask about the hydraulic cylinder seals. That’s a mistake, especially for lifts that are going to see frequent cycling — and a shop doing regular tire rotation and wheel work means the ground-level vehicle gets lifted and lowered constantly, even if the storage vehicle up top barely moves.
Cheap seal kits fail early, and a leaking cylinder on a storage lift isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a vehicle sitting overhead that can start to drift or drop unevenly. We only spec lifts with quality seal kits, and we stock rebuild kits for the units we install so that when a seal does eventually wear out after years of cycling, it’s a same-week fix instead of a multi-week wait on a part from overseas. For a builder cycling lifts several times a week doing tire and wheel work, that reliability is not optional.
Sizing the Lift: Passenger Car Numbers Don’t Apply to Overland Trucks
A lot of vehicle storage lifts on the market are sized around a roughly 6,000 to 7,000 pound rating aimed at passenger cars and light trucks in stock form. That’s fine for a commuter car or an unmodified daily driver, but it falls short fast for a built overland truck. We walked through the actual specs on each rig in this shop — bumper weight, winch weight, roof tent weight, full fuel and water tanks — and sized the lift with real margin above the heaviest configuration, not the lightest.
We’d rather oversize a lift by a reasonable margin than have a customer add a bumper or a tent next year and suddenly be over-capacity on equipment they already paid for. That forward-looking sizing conversation is one we have with every overlanding customer, because these builds rarely stay static — today’s project truck almost always gains more gear.
Layout: Getting Tire Work Access Right Underneath
Because this shop needed to keep doing tire rotation and wheel service on the ground-level vehicle, we paid close attention to clearance around the base of each unit. A four-post storage lift with tight post spacing can make it awkward to get a floor jack, impact wrench, or tire machine positioned where you need it. We laid out the posts to leave a clear working lane on at least two sides of the ground vehicle, which matters more than people expect until they’re actually trying to break a bead or torque lug nuts in a cramped footprint.
We also checked ceiling height against the tallest build in the shop with its roof rack and antenna accounted for, not just the body height. Overlooking a roof rack by even a few inches is a common and expensive mistake, and it’s exactly the kind of thing our free on-site layout visit is designed to catch before a lift gets bolted down.

For this install we used BendPak and Atlas, the two brands we trust for home and shop storage lift applications. Both have a long track record specifically in the storage and home-garage segment, and both give us a reliable parts pipeline for seals, cables, and safety locks when something eventually needs service. For an overlanding shop that plans to run these lifts hard for years, that parts availability mattered as much as the initial price.
We don’t recommend off-brand storage lifts sourced purely online, no matter how good the price looks. When a cylinder seal fails on an off-brand unit with no domestic distributor, you can be looking at weeks without the lift — and that’s an unacceptable outcome when a truck is parked overhead the whole time.

If you’re running multiple project vehicles out of one shop and doing regular tire and wheel work, vehicle storage lifts pay for themselves in floor space alone within the first year. But get the sizing right, ask about seal quality, and have someone walk your actual building before you buy — measurements on paper don’t always match a roof rack in real life.
