Why the Slab Conversation Came First

Before we ever talked model numbers, we asked the shop owner to send us photos and, ideally, records of the original slab pour. RVs and trailers put concentrated static loads through a small footprint of lift posts, and a slab that’s fine for foot traffic and light passenger vehicles can crack or heave under sustained heavy-duty use if it wasn’t designed for it. The shop’s existing floor was standard 4-inch slab poured a decade earlier for general repair work, with no rebar reinforcement specifically under where the posts would sit.

We recommended a minimum 6-inch slab thickness with properly spaced rebar reinforcement in the anchor zones, which is the standard we push for any wheeltronic lift going into heavy-duty service, not just RV work. Some shops try to skip this step to save time and money, and it almost always costs more later when anchors start pulling or the slab develops stress cracks radiating out from the posts. For this shop, we poured a new reinforced section in the specific bay rather than replacing the entire shop floor, which kept costs reasonable while still meeting the load requirements the equipment demanded.

Rebar Spacing and Anchor Zones

Getting the rebar right isn’t just about slapping mesh into wet concrete. For heavy-duty applications, we specify rebar on a tighter grid directly under each anchor bolt location, typically running perpendicular bars spaced closer than standard slab work calls for, tied into the surrounding pour so the reinforced zone doesn’t behave as an isolated island. If the anchor zone is reinforced but not properly tied into the surrounding slab, you can still get differential settling between the reinforced pad and the rest of the floor.

For this Dubuque shop, we worked with a local concrete contractor who had poured commercial shop floors before, and we specified anchor zone rebar with a minimum 3-inch concrete cover to prevent corrosion issues over the equipment’s lifespan. We also made sure the new pour cured a full 28 days before we returned to set anchors and begin installation, even though the shop was eager to get the bay back in service sooner. Delivery Day and What Went Right

The reinforced slab held without any visible cracking, and the anchors stayed tight through repeated load cycles with heavier units than the shop had previously been able to service safely. The First Real Service Call

We sent a technician out to diagnose it directly rather than trying to walk the shop through it over the phone, since heavy-duty equipment issues are worth seeing in person.

The fix was straightforward once we were on site, and it gave the shop owner a clear picture of what routine maintenance and occasional service calls actually look like with this kind of equipment. The second lesson is about sequencing. Confirm your exact equipment footprint and anchor pattern before the concrete truck shows up, not after. And don’t rush the cure time just because the bay is generating revenue pressure to get back online. This shop’s first year went about as smoothly as heavy-duty installs get, and that’s a direct result of doing the unglamorous concrete work correctly before we ever touched the actual equipment.
