Every restoration shop conversation starts the same way — an owner asks what a good alignment setup costs versus a standard service lift, because they’ve heard alignment-capable equipment runs more. It does, but not by as much as most owners assume once you break down what’s actually different: reinforced runways, turntables, slip plates, and in some cases a fixed alignment-specific frame instead of a general two-post.

We tell every shop the same thing we told a Sioux City restoration shop looking at their first real alignment setup: figure out your ceiling clearance and floor space constraints first, then match your budget to what actually fits, because a lift that doesn’t fit the bay isn’t a bargain at any price. A shop working mostly on classic trucks and muscle cars doesn’t need the same alignment package as a high-volume alignment specialist, and paying for capability you won’t use is money better spent on turntables or a better alignment computer.

Ceiling Height: The Constraint Nobody Measures First

Two-post lifts with alignment packages give techs full underbody access, which restoration shops love because so much of their work involves welding, frame repair, and suspension fabrication that needs open access from below — not just wheels off the ground.

Four-post alignment lifts with runways are better suited to shops running higher alignment volume or doing heavier frame work where drive-on stability matters more than underbody access. For a restoration shop split between metalwork and finish alignment work, we often recommend a two-post alignment-capable lift as the primary bay, paired with a portable or scissor alignment lift for high-turnover jobs that don’t need full underbody access. That combination keeps the expensive, fully-equipped bay free for the jobs that actually need it.

Adjustable Height Matters More Than Shops Expect

One detail that comes up constantly with restoration customers is height flexibility — not every job needs the vehicle all the way up. Shops working on two very different builds at once, like a lowered custom and a lifted truck, need a lift that locks at multiple heights rather than just floor level and full extension. Most quality lifts today lock in increments of a couple of inches across their full range, so a tech can set the vehicle exactly where the job calls for rather than working awkwardly at max height for something that only needed a foot of clearance.

For alignment work specifically, this matters because comfortable working height changes the quality of adjustment work on struts, arms, and turntables. A tech straining to reach a caster adjustment at full lift height makes worse adjustments than one working at a height suited to the job.

What a Sioux City Shop Actually Chose
