Picking an auto lift when alignment work is part of your daily mix is a different decision than picking one for general repair, and we get calls about it constantly from small-fleet operators across northwest Iowa — grain haulers with a dozen pickups, gravel-road service trucks, county maintenance yards. The question is almost always framed the same way: do we buy a dedicated alignment rack, or do we buy a general-purpose bay lift and add alignment capability to it later? We install and service both configurations out of our Ames shop, we stock parts for both, and the honest answer depends on how many alignments a week you actually run and what else has to happen in that same bay.

Configuration A: The dedicated four-post alignment rack

The classic setup is a four-post runway rack with rear slip plates built into the runways and front turnplate pockets machined at the correct wheelbase range. Capacities in the 12,000 to 14,000 lb class handle everything a small fleet in northwest Iowa is likely to roll in — three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups, service bodies, Transit and Sprinter vans, the occasional dually. You get rolling jacks that ride on the runways so you can lift the wheels free for tie rod, ball joint, and bushing work without ever moving the vehicle off the rack. That combination is why every alignment shop we have ever set up runs four posts.

The trade-off is bay flexibility. A runway rack occupies its footprint permanently, and while you can absolutely do brakes, exhaust, and driveline work on it, you cannot swing a door open on the drive-side wheel or drop a transmission the way you can on an open-floor two-post. For a fleet running eight or ten alignments a week plus tire work, that is a fine trade. For a shop doing two alignments a week, it is a lot of floor space committed to a small slice of the revenue. We tell operators to count the actual alignment tickets from last year before committing, because the rack is the more expensive of the two configurations up front and the harder one to repurpose later if the work mix shifts.

Configuration B: Two-post with slip plates and portable equipment

The second configuration is a symmetric or asymmetric two-post in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb range, set up with drive-on slip plates and portable turnplates that you position on the floor or on adapter extensions. This is the flexible-bay answer. The same auto lift that runs alignments on Tuesday morning handles transmission removal Tuesday afternoon, and you keep full undercar access with nothing between you and the vehicle. For a small fleet shop where one bay has to do everything, that versatility is worth real money.

What you give up is speed and repeatability. Positioning portable turnplates and getting the vehicle square takes longer than driving onto a purpose-built rack, and you do not get the built-in rear slip plates that let the suspension settle naturally during setup. Toe-and-go adjustments are workable; full four-wheel thrust-angle alignments to OEM spec are harder to hold consistently. We have set up plenty of central and northwest Iowa shops this way and they do fine work, but they will tell you the first hour of a busy day is where the difference shows. Brand history and why it still matters

When a northwest Iowa fleet manager asks which brand to buy, we point at service history rather than spec sheets, because on paper most capable lifts look alike. Rotary has been building automotive lifting equipment out of Madison, Indiana since the 1920s, and that continuity means a rack installed in the 1990s still has published cylinder bores, seal dimensions, and cable lengths. Challenger has a similar record on the commercial side, and their four-post runway designs have stayed dimensionally consistent long enough that adapters and rolling jacks cross between generations. That is not brand loyalty talking — it is what we see when a service call comes in on a twenty-year-old unit.

Contrast that with the churn in the import market. We regularly get called to a shop with a lift whose importer no longer exists, and the only path forward is measuring a failed component and cross-referencing it to something we can source. Sometimes that works. Sometimes the shop eats a replacement. For a fleet operation where downtime in the alignment bay directly stalls trucks, we think buying into a brand with a documented parts lineage is the cheaper decision over a fifteen-year horizon, even when the sticker is higher. Every auto lift we sell is one we can still get parts for a decade from now.

The parts pipeline, and what actually breaks

On a four-post alignment rack the wear items are predictable: lifting cables, sheaves and sheave bearings, the slack-cable safety mechanism, and the power unit. Cables stretch, and on an alignment rack that shows up as runways going out of level, which quietly corrupts your readings before it ever becomes a safety concern. We tell alignment shops to check runway level with a good gauge quarterly rather than annually, because an eighth of an inch of differential stretch is enough to chase a phantom camber problem for an hour. Sheave bearings are cheap; the labor to reach them is not, so we replace them in sets when we are already in there.

On a two-post the wear list shifts to lift cables or chains depending on design, equalization components, arm restraint gears, and carriage slide blocks. Slide blocks are the sleeper item — worn blocks let the carriage rock slightly, which is invisible during normal service and maddening during alignment setup. Floor, ceiling, and drainage realities in a farm-country shop

Most of the northwest Iowa buildings we work in are pole barns or older block shops, and the concrete is the first thing we ask about. A four-post rack spreads load across four columns and is more forgiving of marginal slab, which is one genuine advantage in an older building. A two-post concentrates everything into two anchor clusters and needs real thickness and strength under those baseplates — we want documented four inches minimum at 3,000 psi for most 10,000 lb units, and we would rather core-test than assume. If the slab is thin, saw-cutting and pouring anchor pads is a known fix and cheaper than discovering the problem after installation.

Ceiling height decides the rest. A two-post overhead needs meaningful clearance for the crossbar; a floorplate model trades that for a bar across the floor you will trip over during alignment setup. Four-post racks are shorter overall but you still need room to raise a tall van to working height. Drainage matters more than people expect in farm country, because trucks come in caked with mud and snowmelt and that grit ends up in the sheave pockets and under the runways. We spec a sloped floor away from the columns where we can and tell shops to hose the runways out seasonally. Grit in a sheave chews cable faster than any load cycle ever will.

Running the numbers on two configurations side by side

Here is how we lay it out for a fleet operator deciding between the two. The four-post alignment rack costs more up front — the rack itself, the rolling jacks, the turnplate and slip plate hardware — but it turns alignments faster and holds accuracy better, so if alignment is a revenue line rather than a favor you do for your own trucks, it pays back on throughput. The two-post costs less and keeps the bay universal, which matters enormously when you have exactly one bay and twelve different jobs in a week.

Installation cost runs closer than people assume. Anchoring a two-post is quick; setting a four-post level across four columns and shimming runways to alignment tolerance takes longer. Where they diverge is electrical and air, which we cover in the companion piece on circuit requirements. The decision rule we give northwest Iowa shops: if you are running more than five alignments a week and the bay is dedicated, buy the rack. Under five, or if the bay must stay flexible, buy the two-post with portable turnplates and revisit in three years. We would rather sell you the right equipment once than sell you the wrong one twice, and we have talked plenty of people out of the more expensive option when the volume did not justify it.

We ask what you are lifting, how heavy the worst case is, how many alignments a week, what the building is, how thick the slab is if you know, and what the ceiling measures at the lowest obstruction.
