Myth: Any concrete slab is thick enough for a lift

This is the single most common mistake we see in Ankeny garage builds, and it’s the most expensive one to fix after the fact. A lot of pole-building and detached-garage slabs get poured at four inches because that’s what a contractor defaults to for a workshop floor. Automotive shop lifts — especially two-post units rated for European sedans and SUVs that can weigh well over 4,500 pounds unloaded — need anchoring into concrete that’s typically a minimum of four inches thick with proper PSI rated concrete, and ideally more for heavier lifts. If the slab is too thin or the concrete is too soft, the anchors won’t hold, and no amount of torque spec is going to fix bad substrate.

Myth: Ceiling height only matters for the lift itself

European specialty shops doing oil pan gasket work, timing service, and suspension jobs need enough vertical clearance not just for the lift’s maximum rise, but for a technician standing underneath a raised vehicle with tools in hand. We’ve seen 12-foot sidewalls in Ankeny pole buildings that felt generous on paper but left almost no headroom once you accounted for the lift’s columns, overhead beam clearance, and the vehicle itself at full lift height. For a shop doing gasket and fluid work on lowered European cars, that clearance problem shows up the first week you’re in the building, not during planning.

The fix is sequencing: measure your tallest vehicle, add the lift’s rise, and confirm overhead clearance against your actual truss height and any HVAC ductwork or lighting that hangs down — before you finalize the lift model. A two-post lift with a lower overall height profile might be the better call for a shop with 12-foot walls than a taller four-post unit, even though both can handle the same weight rating.

Myth: Lift placement doesn’t need to be planned with electrical and plumbing

Automotive shop lifts need power for hydraulic pumps, and many bays also need floor drains, air lines, and lighting positioned around the lift footprint, not wherever happened to be convenient during the rough-in. We’ve walked into Ankeny builds where the electrical panel and outlet placement were finished before the lift bay was mapped out, which meant either running new conduit through finished walls or accepting an inconvenient stretch of cord across the shop floor — a real trip hazard in a working bay.

Sequence it the other way: lock in your lift model and bay layout first, then hand that footprint to your electrician and plumber. It costs nothing extra to plan it in the right order, and it saves you from tearing into finished walls or ceilings six months after you open. This is the kind of detail that separates a garage build that works from one that everyone just learns to work around.

Myth: Low-profile arms and adjustable height locks aren’t worth paying for

Specialty European shops often run a mix of vehicles in a day — a lowered sedan in the morning, a stock SUV in the afternoon. Some lifts on the market are all-the-way-down or all-the-way-up with no in-between, which is fine for a general shop but frustrating for a European specialty bay doing detail gasket and undercarriage work at a comfortable working height. We stock and install lifts with height locks set roughly every two to two and a half inches, so a technician can lock the vehicle at exactly the working height they need instead of climbing a step stool or crouching under a fully raised car.

Low-profile arms matter just as much for European cars with tight ground clearance and aggressive front splitters. Getting the arm geometry and pad height right for lower vehicles is a conversation worth having before you buy, not something to discover the first time you try to get pads under a car with two inches of clearance.

Myth: Used lifts are always the budget-friendly answer

We get asked about used automotive shop lifts often, and sometimes a used unit is the right call for a tight budget. But for a European specialty shop investing in a permanent garage build, a used lift with unknown service history, worn cables, or outdated safety mechanisms can end up costing more in downtime and parts than buying new with financing. Automotive shop lifts dictate slab thickness, ceiling clearance, electrical placement, and bay layout — all things that are cheap to plan for and expensive to retrofit.
