Why Oil Pan Work Drives the Whole Spec

Oil pan gasket replacement on a medium- or heavy-duty chassis is deceptively demanding on a lift. You are not just getting under the truck — you are working directly beneath the crossmember with the pan coming straight down, which means you need vertical clearance under the engine, unobstructed access along the centerline, and often room to swing an engine hoist or a transmission jack into the same footprint. On a lot of diesel platforms the pan cannot clear the crossmember without lifting the engine slightly on the mounts, so the tech needs headroom over the top of the truck too, which pushes you toward a bay with real ceiling height or toward mobile columns instead of a fixed lift.

That job requirement drives everything downstream. A clearfloor two-post is ideal because there is nothing crossing the floor where you will be sliding a pan out and rolling a drain pan in. Capacity matters less than you would think for pickups and Class 4 chassis — a 15,000 lb two-post handles most of that work — but the moment you are servicing Class 6 and up, you are into mobile column territory. Single-Phase, Three-Phase, and What Your Panel Really Has

This is where the Urbandale call started. Most commercial two-post lifts ship with a power unit available in 208-230V single-phase, 208-230V three-phase, or 460V three-phase. The motor is typically 2 to 3 horsepower on a standard two-post and larger on heavy-duty and mobile column systems. A 3 HP single-phase motor at 230V draws roughly 17 running amps but pulls a substantial inrush at startup — often four to six times running current for a fraction of a second. A standard breaker sized to running amps will hold most of the time and nuisance-trip when the lift is loaded, cold, or the hydraulic oil is thick in February. That is exactly the intermittent failure he was chasing.

The fix is sizing the circuit to the manufacturer’s data plate, not to a rule of thumb, and using a time-delay breaker or fuse that tolerates motor inrush. For a typical 3 HP single-phase unit we want a dedicated 30-amp circuit with appropriately sized conductors for the run length, plus a fused disconnect within sight of the power unit. Three-phase, where the building has it, is meaningfully better: lower running current per leg, smoother start, longer motor life, and usually cheaper wire. Plenty of light-industrial buildings around Urbandale, Grimes, and Johnston already have 208V three-phase at the panel and nobody ever pulled it to the bays. Step up to a set of four Challenger PKS mobile columns and you are in the mid five figures, which sounds steep until you compare it to the alternative of pouring a pit or rebuilding a bay. Freight on heavy equipment to central Iowa is a real line item — a two-post crates around 2,000 pounds and mobile columns ship on multiple pallets, so budget accordingly and make sure someone on site can unload or that we bring the means to do it.

Installation labor for a fixed two-post is a flat figure covering layout, anchor drilling and setting, plumb and shim, hydraulic hookup, equalization adjustment, load testing, and operator training. Mobile columns install faster because there is no anchoring, but they need a charging plan and a level, sound slab across the whole working area. Electrical is the variable everyone underestimates. A short run from an adjacent panel with a spare double-pole slot might be a few hundred dollars; a new subpanel, a long conduit run across a finished ceiling, or a service upgrade because your 200-amp panel is already maxed can be several thousand. Slab Requirements for Heavy-Duty Loads

Concrete matters more as capacity goes up, and truck shops are often the buildings with the worst surprises. A 10,000 lb two-post wants four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete. A 15,000 lb unit typically wants six inches, and the anchor pattern concentrates enormous tension into a small area at the base of each column when a loaded truck is at full height. We core-test before anchoring on every heavy-duty install, no exceptions. What we find in older Urbandale and Des Moines industrial buildings ranges from beautiful eight-inch reinforced slab to four inches of unreinforced concrete poured over frost-heaved fill in 1968.

When the slab does not make the grade, the standard remedy is saw-cutting a pad at each column location, excavating, and pouring a properly reinforced footing to the manufacturer’s spec — usually a square several feet on a side at the required depth, tied and cured before anchors go in. That adds a week to the timeline and a meaningful chunk to the budget, but it is not optional. Ceiling Height, Doors, and Working Around a Cab-Over

Truck shops usually have height, but not always where you need it. Measure to the lowest obstruction over the actual lift footprint — not the peak of the roof. Radiant tube heaters, sprinkler branch lines, air drops, and overhead door tracks in the open position all count. For a two-post with an overhead beam servicing pickups and Class 4 chassis, we want at least 14 feet clear to give a full-height lift plus vehicle. If you are lifting anything taller, you either go baseplate, go mobile columns, or accept that some vehicles only go up part way.

Door opening height is the other constraint that catches people. A shop can have a 20-foot ceiling and a 12-foot overhead door, which means the tallest thing you can service is whatever fits through the opening. That sounds obvious until someone buys mobile columns to handle straight trucks and discovers the box does not clear the door. We measure both when we walk a site. There is also floor-space geometry to think about: a two-post needs roughly 12 feet of bay width for comfortable door swing on a crew cab, and mobile columns need aisle space to wheel four heavy units in and out. Laying that out on paper before ordering a car lift automotive system prevents the most frustrating category of installation problem — the one where everything works perfectly and it just does not fit the room.

Maintenance Habits That Keep a Truck Lift Alive

Heavy-duty lifts fail from neglect far more often than from defect. The maintenance list is short and almost nobody does all of it. Check hydraulic oil level monthly and change it on the manufacturer’s interval — dirty oil is the leading cause of power unit and cylinder seal failure, and on a shop that runs a lift forty times a day the fluid ages fast. Grease the carriage slide blocks and the arm pivot pins. Inspect equalization cables monthly for broken strands, rust, and even tension, and replace them in matched sets. Verify safety latches engage audibly at every position on both columns.

On mobile columns, add battery maintenance to the list. The lead-acid or lithium packs in PKS-style columns need a charging discipline; columns that sit discharged over a slow winter come back with less capacity and eventually will not synchronize properly. Check the sync cabling or wireless pairing at the start of every job, and never lift with a column showing a fault. We also strongly recommend an annual inspection by an ALI Certified Lift Inspector — most commercial insurance carriers like to see the documentation, and it catches worn arm restraints, cracked welds, and anchor issues before they become incidents.
