A small-fleet operator near the Iowa-Nebraska border sent us two photos last winter: one of a twelve-year-old asymmetric two-post he found on an auction site three counties over, and one of the empty bay where he wanted to put it. His fleet is eleven service vans and pickups, and the work that eats his week is suspension and shock replacement — struts, control arm bushings, sway bar links, the stuff that Iowa gravel roads and Nebraska winters destroy on schedule. He wanted to know whether the used machine was a bargain or a trap, and whether a new car lift was worth roughly double. Configuration A: The Twelve-Year-Old Asymmetric Two-Post
The used unit was a 10,000 lb asymmetric two-post from a recognizable American manufacturer, pulled out of an independent repair shop that closed. Price was roughly a third of new. Columns were straight, the paint was chipped but not rusted through, and the seller had video of it cycling. On the surface, a genuinely good find — and we want to be clear that used equipment from a known brand is often a smart buy. We have installed plenty of secondhand machines and they run for another fifteen years.
The problems with used are the ones you cannot see in a video. First, removal: pulling a two-post out of a slab means cutting or grinding eight anchors, and whoever does it can bend a column base if they get impatient. Second, condition of the cables and hoses, which will be original and near end of life. Third, and this is the big one, documentation. This unit had no ALI certification label left on the column, no manual, and no serial plate we could read from the photos. Without a serial number, sourcing the correct carriage slider blocks, lock pawls, or an equalizer cable set becomes guesswork. We can usually figure it out, but budget for the possibility that we cannot, because a car lift you cannot get parts for is a very heavy piece of scrap in an expensive bay.
Configuration B: A New 12,000 lb Clearfloor Two-Post
The new configuration we quoted was a 12,000 lb clearfloor two-post from Rotary, with three-stage front arms and screw pads. We spec’d up from 10,000 lb deliberately. His fleet includes three-quarter-ton service vans that come in loaded with tools and parts, and those routinely weigh 8,500 to 9,500 lb at the curb. Running a 10K machine at 90 percent of rated capacity every day is legal and technically fine, but it wears components fast and leaves you no margin when someone rolls in with a heavier truck.
Clearfloor mattered too. His bay floor is old and he did not want an overhead crossbar because the building has a low truss at the back. A clearfloor design puts the equalization cables and hydraulic lines in a floor channel instead of overhead, giving unlimited height for a van with a ladder rack. The three-stage front arms swing tight enough to get under a compact sedan and extend far enough to reach the pinch welds on a full-size van. For suspension and shock replacement specifically, this is the configuration that pays for itself, because the tech is never fighting arm reach or wondering whether the vehicle is going to shift when he unloads a strut.
What Suspension Work Demands From a Lift
Not all lifting is equal, and suspension work is the discipline that punishes a mediocre setup. When you pull a strut assembly or a control arm, the vehicle’s weight distribution changes and the suspension droops, sometimes several inches. On a two-post, the vehicle is held by the frame or pinch welds, and that means the wheels hang free — which is exactly what you want for strut work. But it also means the load center shifts as you remove components, and cheap swing arm restraints let the arms creep.
This is where we push people toward quality regardless of used or new. Good arm restraints are positive-engagement gear teeth, not a friction pin. Good lock pawls engage audibly at every position and hold when you lower onto them. On the used unit, we would have pulled the arm restraint covers and inspected the gear teeth before we ever put a vehicle on it, because worn restraints on a car lift doing daily suspension work is a genuine injury risk, not a maintenance nicety. The Cost Comparison, Line by Line
Here is how the two configurations penciled out. The used unit’s purchase price was about a third of the new one — a big, tempting gap. But add teardown and removal at the seller’s site, freight on a trailer across two counties, a full cable set because the originals were twelve years old, new hydraulic hoses, a power unit rebuild or replacement because the pump was noisy in the video, replacement rubber pads, and our installation labor. By the time we finished the honest list, the used configuration landed around 65 to 70 percent of the new one’s installed price.
Thirty percent savings is real. But the new machine came with a manufacturer warranty on the structure, a current ALI certification, a full parts catalog with a serial number, and zero unknowns. The used machine came with a 30 percent discount and a stack of maybes — maybe the columns are true, maybe the cylinder seals hold, maybe we can get carriage parts in three years. For a shop where downtime means eleven vans sitting still, that math tilted toward new. For a hobbyist or a shop with a spare bay, the used unit would have been the right call. The decision framework is not price, it is tolerance for unplanned downtime.
How to Inspect a Used Car Lift Before You Buy It
If you go used — and again, plenty of people should — inspect it in person and in this order. Read the serial plate and photograph it. Check for an ALI Gold Label; if the machine was never third-party certified, that changes your insurance conversation and your resale value. Sight down both columns for bow. Look at the base plates for cracking or elongated anchor holes, which tells you the concrete was marginal or the anchors were loose for a while.
Then cycle it under load if at all possible. Listen to the power unit — a whining pump usually means it has been running low on fluid or sucking air. Watch both carriages rise together; if one lags more than a quarter inch, the equalization system needs attention. Check every hydraulic fitting for weep. Pull the arm restraint covers. Inspect the cable ends where they terminate at the sheaves, because that is where corrosion and broken strands show first. Finally, ask why it is being sold. A shop closing is a good reason. A shop upgrading is a good reason. “It stopped going all the way down” is a reason to walk away or discount hard, because that is either a cylinder, a valve, or a bent carriage and only one of those is cheap. The Brand Question, and Why It Decides Year Ten
Whichever way you go, the brand on the column determines what year ten looks like. We stock and service Rotary and Challenger on the commercial side, and BendPak and Atlas for home and light shop use. Those four have real parts pipelines, published service literature, and a network of trained techs. When a fleet shop near the border calls us on a Tuesday with a leaking cylinder, we can usually name the part and have it moving that week.
The alternative is the situation we see constantly in our inbox: someone with a black four-post or a no-name two-post, no idea of the brand or model, a vehicle stuck in the air, and a cylinder that lets go. We take those calls and we help, but the repair takes three times as long and sometimes ends with fabricating or cross-referencing a cylinder because the original supplier no longer exists. That is the real risk in a used purchase, and it has almost nothing to do with the machine’s age. A fifteen-year-old Rotary is a better bet than a three-year-old import nobody can identify.
