When a weekend restorer in northern Missouri calls us about a car lift automotive purchase for a pole barn full of half-finished sheet metal projects, the first question is almost never the right one. It’s usually “what’s your cheapest two-post?” The better question is what this thing will cost over the next twenty years, because that’s how long a well-chosen lift lasts in a hobby shop that sees a few hundred hours a year instead of a few thousand. Start With The Slab, Not The Brochure

Every twenty-year cost conversation starts underground. A two-post lift transfers its entire load into four to eight anchor points, and the concrete under those anchors is either adequate or it isn’t. Most manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty want more than that for higher-capacity models. Older northern Missouri farm buildings and hobby barns frequently have three-and-a-half-inch slabs poured over questionable base, sometimes with no rebar and sometimes with a control joint running exactly where you want a column. We’ve seen slabs that looked perfect on top and crumbled the moment a hammer drill went in.

The cheap fix is a saw-cut footing pad: cut out a section, dig down, pour a proper pad tied into the existing slab, and set the columns on that. Budget a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on how much you do yourself and what concrete costs locally that season. The expensive fix is discovering the problem after the lift is bolted down and the columns start to lean. If you’re spending real money on a car lift automotive setup you intend to keep for two decades, spend the afternoon coring the slab first. A single core sample and a tape measure will tell you more about your total cost of ownership than any spec sheet comparison you’ll do online.

Capacity Sizing For Restoration Work, Not Just Curb Weight

Hobbyists chronically undersize. The logic goes: my project is a 3,400 lb Nova, so a 9,000 lb lift is overkill. Then a friend’s three-quarter-ton pickup needs brakes, or you buy a K5 Blazer, or the neighbor’s dually shows up with a wobble. A 7,000 lb lift like the one a northern Missouri customer emailed us photos of last winter is genuinely fine for cars and half-tons, but it walls off a lot of future work. We tell restorers to buy 10,000 lb unless the ceiling or budget makes it impossible.

Restoration and metal work also change how you load a lift. You’re not doing a ten-minute oil change; you’re leaving a stripped shell up in the air for three weeks while you weld patch panels, and the vehicle’s balance shifts every time you cut something out. A bare unibody with the drivetrain pulled sits very differently than a complete car. Higher capacity means more arm reach, more pad adjustment range, and more margin when the center of gravity moves. On the two-post side we point people at Rotary and Challenger; both build asymmetric models that let you open doors on a coupe without hitting a column, which matters enormously when you’re climbing in and out fifty times a day. Capacity headroom is one of the cheapest forms of insurance you can buy.

What Actually Fails Over Twenty Years

Here’s our field-service view of what wears out, in rough order of frequency. Cables and lifting chains go first on two-post lifts — they stretch, they fray at the sheave, and they’re a replaceable wear item, not a failure. Equalization cables on a good lift are a routine service part; on an orphaned import they’re a scavenger hunt. Second, hydraulic cylinder seals. A cylinder that weeps at the gland is normal after a decade of duty and gets resealed or replaced. Third, the power unit — motor brushes, pump gears, and the lowering solenoid.

Fourth, and this is the one that actually kills lifts, safety hardware: latch springs, lock dogs, and arm restraint gears. Those parts are what make a lift legal and safe to stand under, and when they’re unavailable the machine is done. That’s the real twenty-year math on any car lift automotive purchase. Structural steel almost never fails in a hobby shop. What ends the lift is the day you need a lock latch assembly and the importer that sold it has changed names twice and no longer answers the phone. We stock and source parts for every major brand, including a lot of discontinued models, and we can usually cross-reference a cylinder or cable by measurement even when the nameplate is long gone. But we can’t manufacture a proprietary lock dog for a brand nobody supports.

Parts Availability Is The Whole Ballgame

Before you buy, do this test: find the manufacturer’s parts breakdown for the exact model you’re considering. Not a generic diagram — the actual illustrated parts list with part numbers. If you can’t find it in fifteen minutes online, or if the seller can’t email you one, that’s your answer. Brands with real North American support publish those documents and keep them available for decades. We regularly pull up parts diagrams for Rotary lifts installed in the 1980s and order the exact cable assembly.

The second test is a phone call. Call the manufacturer’s tech line and ask a specific question about a safety component. Note how long it takes to reach a human and whether that human knows the product. A hobbyist we worked with in northern Missouri bought a bargain lift from a marketplace listing, and four years later needed a slack-cable safety spring. The importer’s number rang to a voicemail box that was full. We ended up fabricating a workaround, which is not something we love doing on a safety system. Compare that to a Challenger or Rotary owner who calls us with a model number and has parts on a truck in a couple of days. Over twenty years, parts access is worth more than the two thousand dollars you saved up front — it’s the difference between a tool and a large steel sculpture.

Freight, Installation, And The Costs Nobody Quotes You

The advertised price of a two-post is rarely what lands in your barn. Freight on a 2,000 lb crated lift to a rural northern Missouri address runs a meaningful chunk of the purchase price, and if you don’t have a forklift or a loader with forks, you’re paying for liftgate service or arranging a terminal pickup. We’ve watched people try to skate a lift off a flatbed with a come-along. Don’t. Second, electrical: most single-phase power units want a dedicated 220V, 30-amp circuit. If your panel is at the house and the barn is fed by a small subpanel, an electrician’s bill is coming.

Third, installation itself. A competent DIYer with a rotary hammer, a good level, and a helper can set a two-post in a day. Plenty of people do it well. But the shimming and plumb tolerances matter more than folks expect, and an out-of-plumb column chews cables and slides. Professional installation typically runs a modest fraction of the lift cost and includes a load test and a safety-function check. Fourth, ongoing: an annual ALI-style inspection, a gallon of hydraulic fluid every few years, and cable replacement once or twice over two decades. Add it all up and a realistic twenty-year figure for a quality car lift automotive installation is roughly the purchase price plus twenty-five to forty percent — front-loaded, then very cheap to own.

Two-Post Versus Four-Post For A Restoration Barn

For metal work and restoration, we usually steer people to a two-post. Open floor under the vehicle means you can get a MIG gun to a rocker panel, run a floor jack anywhere, and roll a creeper the full length of the car. A four-post’s runways sit right where you want to be welding, and the ramps eat floor space you need for a parts cart and an English wheel. Two-post also gives you true wheels-free access, which matters when you’re pulling suspension apart.

That said, four-post has real advantages if storage is part of the plan. If the barn does double duty and you want the project car parked overhead all winter while the daily driver lives underneath, a four-post is the answer — and it’s drive-on, which means no arm positioning and no anchor requirements in most cases. Some restorers eventually run both. If you’re going four-post, plan for a rolling jack from day one rather than adding it later; we get a steady stream of calls about Challenger four-post rolling jack fitment and lift adjustment, and it’s much simpler to spec the jack with the lift than to retrofit one to runways that don’t quite match. Either way, measure your ceiling before you commit, since a four-post that lifts a car onto a second level needs real vertical room.

Run this list before you click buy on any car lift automotive package. One: core or verify your slab thickness and PSI, and locate control joints. Two: measure ceiling height at the lowest obstruction — trusses, lights, garage door track, opener rail. Three: list every vehicle you might put on it in the next decade and buy capacity for the heaviest, not the average. Four: confirm the power unit voltage and phase against your actual panel capacity. Five: locate the illustrated parts list and confirm the brand answers its phone. Six: get a delivered freight quote to your specific rural address, not a generic zone estimate.

Seven: decide who’s installing it and price that honestly. Eight: confirm the lift carries ALI/ETL certification, which is your independent proof the safety systems were actually tested. Nine: plan where the power unit and hoses go so you’re not fighting a hose route around a welding bench. Ten: budget a few hundred dollars a year for inspection and wear parts.
