What the Safety Cam Actually Does

Every two post lift carries its load on a hydraulic cylinder inside each column, but the cylinder itself isn’t what holds the vehicle in the air long-term. Hydraulic fluid can leak, seals can weep, and pressure can bleed off slowly even on a healthy lift. The safety cam is the mechanical backup that takes the hydraulic pressure out of the equation entirely. As the carriage rises, a toothed bar or notched column lets a spring-loaded cam pivot and drop into place behind the carriage, physically blocking it from descending even if the cylinder loses all its pressure.

Reading the Sound and Feel of a Healthy Lock

A close second is a worn or stretched release cable, which can hold the cam partially retracted even when the release handle isn’t being pulled, so the cam never fully seats.

Physical wear on the cam’s teeth or on the notches in the column is the third major cause, and it’s the one that actually requires replacement rather than cleaning. Years of the cam repeatedly dropping into the same few notches can round off the edges, and a rounded tooth doesn’t hold load the same way a sharp one does. We also see damaged return springs, usually from age or from someone spraying the wrong kind of degreaser directly onto the mechanism and washing out the factory lubrication. Any one of these issues on its own might not cause an obvious failure day to day, but they compound, and that’s exactly why routine inspection matters more than people think.

Inspection Points We Check on Every Service Call
