Start With the Cables — Every Single Time
Four-post lifts are cable-equalized, which means four wire ropes are doing all the lifting and leveling while the hydraulic cylinder just supplies force. That makes the cables the single most important item on the list, and the first thing we put hands and eyes on. We run a shop rag along the accessible length of each cable — carefully, wearing gloves. If the rag snags, you have broken wire strands, and broken strands mean the cable is on borrowed time. We also look at the cable where it wraps the sheaves, because that is where fatigue concentrates. Sheaves themselves get checked for free rotation; a frozen sheave saws through a cable faster than anything else we see.
Then we check tension and equalization. Park the runways at a lock position, drop to the locks, and look at whether all four corners sit level. If one corner rides low, the cables are out of adjustment and the load is no longer being shared the way the engineer intended. Adjustment is done at the threaded cable ends, a little at a time, checking level as you go. One caution from experience: if a lift has never been adjusted in ten years and suddenly needs a lot of correction, that usually means a cable has stretched unevenly or a sheave bearing has failed. Replace cables as a matched set of four, never one at a time — mixing a new cable with three stretched ones just moves the problem to the next weakest rope.
Slack-Cable Safeties and Lock Latches
The slack-cable safety is the device that catches the runway if a cable loses tension, and on most four-posts it is a spring-loaded pawl riding on a lock ladder inside the column. Finally, we confirm the release mechanism works from the power unit or air valve and that all four latches release together. A lift that only releases three of four latches will bind and load the frame in ways it was never designed for.
Hydraulics: Cylinder, Hoses, Fittings, and Fluid
Hydraulic inspection is fast if you know where the leaks hide. We start at the power unit, checking fluid level with the lift fully lowered — checking it raised gives a false low reading and leads people to overfill. Fluid should be clean and clear; milky fluid means water intrusion, and dark, varnished fluid means it has been cooked and needs changing. Most shops we service in central Iowa get by with a fluid change every couple of years, more often if the lift cycles hard all day. Use the fluid the manufacturer specifies. Cheap substitutes swell seals and turn a five-minute top-off into a cylinder rebuild.
From there we follow the hose the full run to the cylinder, looking for weeping fittings, abrasion where the hose crosses a frame member, and any spot where the hose is kinked or under tension at full rise. A cylinder that leaks a little at the gland seal will often leave a telltale dust-caked stripe down the barrel — that is your early warning. We also watch for drift: raise the lift, note the height, come back in fifteen minutes and check again. Drift on a four-post is usually a cylinder seal or a bad check valve at the power unit, and both are repairable long before they become a failure. Anchors, Runways, Ramps, and Accessories

Jacking beam rails deserve attention too: if the bridge jack rolls hard or the rails are galled, the beam can bind and lift unevenly. Drip trays, if you run them, should be pulled and cleaned so you can actually see the runway underneath. On the aluminum and lightweight ramps common on home lifts, check for cracks around the pin holes; that is the highest-stress spot on the whole assembly.
How Often, and Who Should Do It
We break service into three intervals. Daily or pre-use is a thirty-second look: no fluid on the floor, cables not obviously frayed, latches clicking, nothing stored under the runways. Monthly is the hands-on version described above — cables, safeties, locks, fluid level, ramp hardware — and takes a competent shop tech under an hour. Annual is the deep inspection, and that is where we recommend bringing in someone certified. Storage lifts in home garages get a different kind of abuse: not high cycle counts, but long periods sitting loaded and untouched. A car parked on a four-post for eight months puts a static load on the same short section of cable and the same lock notch the entire time, and that is where corrosion starts.
