Why Leveling Comes Before Everything Else

Alignment equipment measures angles relative to true level, not relative to your shop floor. If the lift surface the vehicle sits on isn’t level side-to-side and front-to-back, every camber, caster, and toe reading the machine spits out is compromised before the tech even hooks up sensor heads. Runway and Turntable Alignment

Once the base is level, the runways themselves need to be parallel to each other and square to the vehicle’s centerline, and the turntables need to sit flush and free-spinning at exactly the right height relative to the runway surface. A turntable that sits even slightly proud or recessed introduces error into every steering angle measurement taken on that rack. This is a precision task, not a bolt-it-down-and-move-on task, and it’s where a lot of the real skill in alignment lift setup and leveling shows up.

We check turntable height with feeler gauges and confirm free rotation under simulated load before calling a runway finished. Slip plates at the rear need the same attention — they have to move freely in both axes without binding, or the suspension can’t settle naturally when the alignment machine takes its readings. Scissor and Mid-Rise Alignment Platforms

Scissor-style alignment lifts bring their own leveling considerations because the lifting mechanism itself has to raise evenly on both sides or the platform racks side to side under load. We check hydraulic synchronization between cylinders during commissioning and confirm the platform stays level through the full range of travel, not just at ground height and full extension. A scissor lift that levels fine at the bottom but sags on one side halfway up will still produce bad alignment data even if it looked perfect during a quick walk-around check.

Wheel Alignment-Specific Sensor and Reference Considerations

Beyond the mechanical leveling of the lift itself, the alignment machine’s cameras or sensor targets need a clean, unobstructed, consistent reference environment, and that’s part of the overall alignment lift setup and leveling conversation too. Iowa’s freeze-thaw cycle does real work on concrete slabs over time, and a lift that was perfectly level when installed in July can develop a measurable pitch by the following spring.
