Before we ever talk lift model, we talk concrete. An alignment lift setup lives or dies on floor flatness and level, because alignment equipment is measuring angles down to fractions of a degree. A runway or platform that sags even slightly from one end to the other will feed bad data into the alignment head, and the tech will spend the whole job chasing numbers that never quite settle. We’ve walked into shops where the lift was installed correctly but the slab itself had a low spot under one post, and no amount of shimming the lift head fixes that long-term.
This is why every alignment lift setup we quote starts with a floor evaluation — core samples if the shop doesn’t already know their slab thickness and rebar, plus a level check across the full footprint of the lift. In-ground alignment lifts still have a place, mostly in high-volume dealership service departments where techs want a completely open floor with nothing to trip over and unobstructed access to all four corners of the vehicle. The tradeoff is cost and complexity — proper drainage, a sealed cylinder or piston housing, and a concrete pit built to spec. Turnplates, Slip Plates, and Rear Slip Plates Done Right
The moving components are what actually make an alignment lift setup work, and they’re also what gets installed wrong most often. Front turnplates need to be locked during loading and unloading and then freed for the alignment reading — if the locking pins are misaligned or the plate sits proud of the runway surface, the tech either can’t get the car settled or the plate binds under weight. Rear slip plates need genuine float in both directions so the rear suspension can settle naturally; we’ve seen plates installed with too much anti-seize gunked into the bearing surface, which defeats the purpose entirely.

Leveling and Calibration After Installation
Getting the lift bolted down level is only step one. Every alignment lift setup needs a post-install check with the actual alignment equipment before the shop starts billing customers on it — run a known-good vehicle across the plates and confirm the readings match what a second, calibrated system would show. We also recommend a level check on a schedule, especially in older buildings where the slab can shift slightly with frost heave over an Iowa winter. An alignment lift setup doesn’t exist in isolation — it needs enough clear space in front of and behind the vehicle for the alignment camera targets or wheel sensors to have an unobstructed line of sight, and it needs even, glare-free lighting so the tech can read the equipment display and inspect suspension components without fighting shadows. We’ve seen shops squeeze an alignment bay into a corner that technically fits the lift but leaves no room for the camera stands, which forces the tech to compromise on setup every single time.
Workflow matters too. If the alignment bay is the last stall a car has to snake through, you’re going to have bottlenecks on busy days.
