A standard four-post lift and an alignment rack look similar from twenty feet away, and that similarity has cost more than one shop a lot of money. The difference is in the runways. An alignment-capable rack has front turnplate pockets machined into the runways, rear slip plates that let the back axle move freely while the tech sets toe, and a runway structure built to hold flatness under load rather than just hold weight. Toe is measured in fractions of a degree. If the runways twist or the rack settles unevenly, every number the aligner reads is fiction, and the tech ends up chasing a pull that was never in the vehicle.

Camera-based aligners need clear sightlines from the tower or the cabinet to the targets on all four wheels, so post placement, cabinet location, and even where you park the tire machine matter. If you are going with a newer mobile or overhead-mounted system, you need to know the mounting height and whether your ceiling structure can carry it.
We also talk about lift height. Techs who spend all day under vehicles want the rack up where they can work standing, but the aligner has a calibrated working range. An alignment rack is a measuring instrument, and measuring instruments drift. Turnplates get gravel and salt packed into them, slip plates seize up, locking pins wear, and cables stretch unevenly so one corner sits a hair lower than the others.
