When shop owners ask us about the annual lift inspection what we check comes down to a repeatable walk-through we’ve run thousands of times across Iowa — from two-bay independents in small river towns to twelve-bay dealership service drives in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. We’re Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, and inspections are a big part of what our field techs do between installs. The goal isn’t to write you up. The goal is to catch the cable that’s fraying inside a sheave, the anchor bolt that’s lost its torque, the lock latch that only sounds like it’s engaging, and the arm restraint pin that quietly wore itself round three years ago — before any of that turns into a dropped vehicle.

Why we inspect annually instead of “when something feels off”

ANSI/ALI ALCTV and the ALI Lifting It Right standard both call for a qualified inspection at least once a year, and OSHA leans on that same expectation when an inspector walks into your bay. But the practical reason is simpler: lifts fail slowly. A hydraulic cylinder doesn’t blow out on a Tuesday with no warning — it seeps for months, the fluid level drops, the lift starts drifting down overnight, and somebody tops off the reservoir instead of asking why. Equalizer cables don’t snap without stranding first. Anchors don’t shear without loosening first. Every failure we’ve ever been called out for had a written-down warning sign somebody could have caught twelve months earlier.

That’s why the annual lift inspection what we check list is built around wear indicators rather than breakdowns. We’re looking for the early stage of each known failure mode on that specific lift model. A Rotary SPOA10 has different wear points than a Challenger CL10V3 or a BendPak four-post in a home garage. Serial number matters too — a lift built in 1998 may have superseded lock assemblies or a recalled arm restraint that the current parts book handles differently. We record all of it, so next year’s inspection isn’t starting from zero. Shops that keep a three-year paper trail almost always spend less on parts than shops that call us only when a lift stops going up.

Anchors, concrete and the floor underneath

We start at the bottom because that’s where the whole lift lives or dies. Every anchor bolt on a two-post gets a torque wrench put on it — not a visual glance, an actual torque check against the manufacturer’s spec, which is usually in the 85 to 150 ft-lb range depending on brand and anchor diameter. If a bolt keeps turning without loading up, the concrete around it has crushed and the anchor needs to be relocated, not retorqued. We check baseplate shims too. A tower that’s been shimmed with three stacked washers instead of proper full-contact shims will rock under load and work those anchors loose all over again.

Then the concrete itself. We’re looking for cracks radiating out from the baseplate, spalling at the anchor holes, and any sign the slab is thinner than the lift’s requirement — most 10,000 lb two-post lifts need at least 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and older Iowa shop floors often aren’t there. We’ve found 3-inch slabs poured over dirt in buildings from the fifties, and we’ve found perfectly good 6-inch pads with a control joint running right through the driver-side tower. Neither one is a lift problem, but both change what we can honestly sign off on. When we find a slab issue, we tell you exactly what a cut-out-and-repour costs in general terms and where the lift can be relocated instead.

Cables, chains, sheaves and the equalizer system

On a two-post, the equalizer cables keep both carriages moving together, and they’re the single most common part we replace during inspection season. We run a gloved hand along every accessible inch looking for broken strands, then pull the covers to inspect the runs inside the columns — which is where cables actually fail, because that’s where they bend over sheaves and collect grit. Any broken wire in a single lay, visible kinking, corrosion, or flattening means the cable comes out. We don’t repair cables. We also check sheave bearings for freeplay and check that the sheave grooves haven’t worn a lip that will chew the next cable up.

Four-post lifts get the same treatment on all four lifting cables plus the slack-cable safety mechanism, which we test by intentionally letting one cable go slack and confirming the locks drop. Chain-drive lifts get chain elongation measured against spec — chains stretch, and a stretched chain rides wrong on the sprocket. Part of the annual lift inspection what we check involves cable tension balance: if one carriage sits even a half inch high, the cables are unequal, and that difference multiplies at the top of travel. We adjust, then cycle the lift several times and re-measure, because a cable that was just adjusted will settle.

Locks, latches and the sounds a good lift makes

A lift’s mechanical locks are the last line between a car and the floor, and they’re the part most shops assume are fine because they hear clicking. Clicking isn’t engagement. We raise the lift to several heights and confirm each latch fully seats in its ladder rack, then lower onto the locks and verify both sides carry load evenly. On two-posts we check the lock release cables and air cylinders — a sticky air cylinder that holds one latch partially retracted is genuinely dangerous, and it’s silent. We replace worn latch pins, weak lock springs, and any ladder rack with rounded or mushroomed teeth.

Arm restraints get the same scrutiny. Gear-type restraints wear at the tooth engagement and start slipping under side load, which is how a car walks off a lift during a stubborn exhaust job. We rotate every arm through its full sweep, load-check the restraint, and inspect swing-arm pivot pins for elongation. Adapters and pad rubbers count here too — cracked pads and mismatched stack heights are a real cause of instability, and they’re cheap to fix. Any of these items may be part of the annual lift inspection what we check, but locks and restraints are the two we never sign off on with a note that says “monitor.” They pass or they get parts.

Hydraulics, power unit and controls

We pull the power unit cover and look at fluid level and fluid condition. Milky fluid means water intrusion, common in unheated Iowa shops with big temperature swings; dark and burnt means the pump has been running hot or the fluid is years past due. We check the reservoir vent, the filter screen, and the motor’s mounting and wiring. Then we run the lift under load and time the full raise cycle — a lift that used to hit full height in 45 seconds and now takes 70 is telling you the pump is worn or the relief valve is bypassing.

Every hydraulic line, fitting and cylinder gets a leak inspection with the lift both loaded and holding at height. A cylinder that drifts more than a manufacturer-specified amount over ten minutes needs seals or replacement. We check hose routing for chafe points against carriage weldments, because a rubbed hose fails with no warning at all. On the electrical side, we verify the up button is momentary-contact only, the lowering handle returns to neutral on release, the overhead limit switch or shutoff bar actually stops the motor, and the disconnect is labeled and reachable. Controls that have been jumpered, taped down or bypassed by a previous tech get restored to original function — we’ve found zip-tied up buttons more than once.

Labels, documentation and the paperwork that protects you

Missing warning labels sound like a technicality until an insurance adjuster or an OSHA inspector is standing in your bay. Every lift needs its capacity label, ALI/ANSI safety labels, operating instructions, and the manufacturer’s serial plate legible and in place. We carry replacement label kits for the major brands and install them during the visit rather than mailing you a to-do list. If the original owner’s manual is long gone — and in a shop that’s changed hands twice, it usually is — we source the correct manual for that model and serial so your techs have the real lowering procedure and load capacity, not a guess.

You get a written report the same day. It lists every lift by brand, model, serial and bay location, with each check-point marked pass, adjusted, or needs-repair, plus part numbers and a plain-English recommendation. Items we consider unsafe get tagged out of service on the spot, and we’ll tell you straight whether that lift is worth repairing or whether replacement is the smarter money. That report is your record for insurance, for your safety program, and for the next inspection cycle. Scheduling, cost and what to expect from our visit

Most shops book us for all their lifts in one visit, which is the cheapest way to do it — the travel is the same whether we inspect one lift or ten. Budget roughly 30 to 45 minutes per surface-mount lift for a clean inspection, longer for ingrounds where we need to check the tank, plunger seals and the pit environment. We ask that bays be empty and that you have a vehicle available for load testing. If we find parts needed, we can often install common items — cables, latch kits, restraint gears, hoses — on the same trip, because our trucks carry them.
