Keep the floor around the lift clear. It sounds basic, but we walk into shops regularly where a brake bay has slowly accumulated a tire rack, a used parts bin, and a rolling cabinet that’s parked in the one spot a tech needs to stand to work a caliper. Part of any real brake service bay setup review is just walking the space empty and asking whether everything currently in it actually needs to be there.

Lighting and Ergonomics

Brake work is detail work — checking rotor thickness, inspecting pad wear, spotting a weeping caliper seal — and a dim bay slows all of it down. LED shop lighting directly over the lift, plus a portable trouble light or headlamp for each tech, pays for itself in fewer missed callbacks. We also recommend positioning the lift so the tech isn’t working with their back to a window or bay door, which creates glare and shadow exactly where they need to see clearly.

Ergonomics matter for a bay that runs brake jobs all day. Lift height that puts wheel-well work at a comfortable standing level, easy-reach tool storage, and a lathe bench at the right height all reduce fatigue across a full shift. A brake service bay setup that’s comfortable to work in all day is one that keeps techs faster and more accurate on job three as on job one.

Space Planning for Multi-Bay Shops

If you’re building more than one brake bay, or converting a bay from general repair, think about how it connects to your tire and brake bay setup or your general service flow. Shops running a combined tire-and-brake operation often benefit from placing that bay near the front of the shop, closest to the customer waiting area, since it’s typically the fastest-turning bay in the building.
