Every month someone calls us with a Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace lift listing pulled up on their phone, asking whether it’s worth the drive. Our answer is always the same: bring a buying a used lift inspection checklist with you, because a lift that looks fine in photos can hide cracked welds, a bad cylinder, or missing safety parts that cost more to fix than the lift is worth. Start With the Paperwork, Not the Steel
Before we ever put hands on a used lift, we ask for the manufacturer, model number, and, if possible, the serial number tag. Some lifts sold on the used market are decades old, off-brand, or rebadged units with no parts support anywhere in the country. If the seller can’t produce a model plate or it’s been ground off, that’s a red flag worth walking away from, not a detail to shrug off.
We also ask how long the lift has been sitting unused. A lift that sat outdoors under a tarp for two years behaves very differently than one pulled straight out of a working shop. Rust works into cylinder rods and cable sheaves fast in Iowa weather, and hydraulic fluid left standing can gum up seals. Ask for maintenance records if they exist, and ask directly why the lift is being sold. Shops upgrading to higher capacity are usually selling clean equipment; shops closing due to a failed inspection are sometimes selling a problem. Inspect the Cables, Chains, and Sheaves
On any cable-style two-post lift, we go straight to the cables first. Fraying, flat spots, kinks, or visible rust on the strands mean replacement is coming soon whether the seller mentions it or not. Run your hand along the length if it’s safe to do so, and look closely where cables wrap around sheaves, since that’s where wear concentrates fastest. Uneven cable tension between the two posts is another sign of a lift that hasn’t been maintained on schedule.
Check the sheaves themselves for cracks or flat-spotting, and look at the equalizer cable and its anchor points for corrosion. On four-post and chain-driven lifts, pull the chain covers if you can and look for stretched links or rust buildup. None of this is necessarily a deal-breaker — cables and chains are wear items we replace all the time — but it does change the real cost of the purchase. Factor replacement into your offer instead of discovering it after the lift is already bolted down in your bay.
Check the Cylinders and Hydraulic Lines
Hydraulic cylinders are one of the more expensive parts to replace on a used lift, so we look here carefully every time. Wipe the cylinder rod clean and look for pitting, scoring, or a film of fluid that reappears within a few minutes. A cylinder that’s leaking internally will often show the lift settling slowly on its own with a vehicle up, which is something you can only catch with a real cycle test, not a visual check. Ask to see the lift actually run through a full cycle before you commit.
Look over every hydraulic line and fitting for weeping fluid, cracked hose jacketing, or repairs that look improvised. A lift with mismatched hose clamps or non-original fittings tells us someone patched a leak rather than fixing it properly. Test the Locking Mechanism Every Time
The mechanical locks are the single most important safety feature on any lift, and we never skip testing them, no matter how good the rest of the machine looks. Raise the lift with a load if possible, engage the locks, and then try to lower it using the release before you’re satisfied they hold firm. Locks should engage cleanly at each notch without hesitation or grinding, and the release mechanism should require deliberate action, not fall into place on its own.
We’ve walked away from lifts that looked nearly new because the locking pawls were worn round and skipped notches instead of catching solidly. That’s not a cosmetic issue — it’s the difference between a lift holding a vehicle safely and one that doesn’t. If the seller is uncomfortable letting you test the locks under load, treat that hesitation as information. A seller confident in their equipment will let you run it exactly the way you plan to use it.
Look Hard at the Concrete Anchoring History
A used lift is only as good as the pad it’s been sitting on, and reused anchor bolts are one of the most overlooked risks in a private sale. If a seller plans to include the anchors with the lift, ask how many times that pad has been drilled and whether the original bolts were removed and reinstalled. Anchors that have been pulled once are compromised and should be replaced during your own install, not reused to save a few dollars.
Ask about the age and thickness of the slab the lift was mounted on previously, since your own garage floor needs to meet the same requirements regardless of what the lift was sitting on before. This part of the checklist doesn’t affect the machine itself, but it affects whether the purchase makes sense for your space. We’ve turned away installs where a customer bought a great lift for a floor that simply couldn’t support it, and that’s a conversation worth having before money changes hands, not after.
Check for Missing or Mismatched Safety Parts
Used lifts frequently show up missing arm restraints, slack cable safety switches, or the correct pins and clips that came with the original unit. Sellers sometimes don’t realize these parts are missing because the lift still appears to function without them. Walk the entire lift and account for every safety component the original manual lists, and don’t assume a missing part is a small thing — slack cable switches exist specifically to stop the lift if a cable fails, and a lift without one is genuinely more dangerous to operate.
Mismatched parts are another warning sign. If you see one arm restraint that looks original and one that’s clearly aftermarket or homemade, ask why. It usually means a part broke and got replaced with whatever was on hand rather than the correct component. Get a Professional Second Opinion Before You Install
