Start With the Paperwork, Not the Steel
Before you even walk out to look at the equipment, ask for the make, model, and capacity rating off the data tag. Any legitimate seller can tell you this in five seconds. Check the pulleys and sheaves for grooving, cracking, or a wobble when the lift cycles. If the lift is still bolted down, ask to see the anchor bolts and the concrete around them. Cracked or crumbling concrete near the base, elongated anchor holes, or bolts that spin freely are signs the lift has been working against its foundation, which stresses the columns and safety locks in ways that aren’t always visible from a quick glance. Test the Arms, Locks, and Safety Systems
Cycle the lift up and down if you’re able to, and pay attention to how the arms move. They should extend and retract smoothly without grinding, sticking, or excessive play at the pads. Check the arm restriction pins and locking mechanisms — worn pin holes or bent restraints mean the arms won’t lock securely under a vehicle, which is a serious safety issue rather than a cosmetic one.
Test the safety locks on both columns by raising the lift partway and watching how the mechanical locks engage as it descends slightly. They should catch cleanly and evenly on both sides at the same height. Look at the Hydraulic System and Power Unit

Old, contaminated fluid accelerates wear on seals and valves, and a lift that’s been sitting unused for a year or more often needs a fluid change and a full seal inspection before it’s trusted with real weight. Listen for excessive noise when the pump runs — a healthy unit hums, while a struggling one whines or labors.
Ask whether the lift has ever had a cylinder rebuilt or replaced, since that’s a good indicator of how hard it’s been used. Verify the Lift Matches Your Ceiling and Bay Layout

Measure your ceiling height with the lift fully extended, check overhead obstructions like ductwork or garage door tracks, and confirm your floor’s slab thickness and condition can support the anchoring requirements for that model’s capacity.
