Why an Annual Checklist Matters More Than Random Checks
A lot of shops we visit already do some kind of maintenance — somebody eyeballs the lift now and then, greases a fitting when they remember. That’s better than nothing, but it’s not a car lift annual maintenance checklist. A checklist means the same items get inspected every single time, in the same order, whether it’s a busy Tuesday or the slowest week of winter. That consistency is what catches problems early, because you’re comparing this year’s wear against last year’s notes instead of just glancing and moving on.
It also matters for liability. If a lift ever fails and someone gets hurt, the first question an insurance adjuster or attorney asks is whether the equipment was maintained on a documented schedule. We tell every customer to keep a binder or a shared folder with dates, findings, and what was replaced. It costs nothing and it protects the business.
Cables, Chains, and Pulleys
On two-post lifts especially, this is where we spend the most time. Cables should be inspected end to end for fraying, kinking, flat spots, or rust bleeding through the strands. Any of those is a replacement, not a wait-and-see. We also check that cable tension is even across both sides — uneven tension means one side is carrying more load than the other, which accelerates wear and can cause a lift to sit crooked under a vehicle. Pulleys and sheaves need to spin freely with no wobble, and we look closely at the grooves for grooving or flat-spotting from cable wear.
Chain-style four-post lifts get a similar treatment. Chains should have consistent link spacing with no elongation, and the equalizer cables that keep the platforms level need to be checked for the same fraying and tension issues as two-post cables. This is one of the sections of the checklist we’re strictest about, because cable failure is one of the few lift problems that can happen fast and without much warning.
Hydraulic System and Fluid
Every hydraulic lift needs its fluid checked for level, color, and contamination. Fluid that’s gone dark or milky is telling you something — usually water intrusion or seal breakdown — and it should be flushed and replaced, not topped off. We inspect hoses and fittings for weeping, cracking, or soft spots, and we check the cylinder itself for any external leakage along the rod. A slow leak that’s been ignored for a year often turns into a full seal replacement job that could have been a much smaller fix caught earlier.
We also test the lift’s descent speed and smoothness. A lift that jerks, stalls, or descends unevenly on one side usually has an internal seal problem, air in the system, or a valve that needs adjustment. These are things you feel more than see, which is why we recommend actually running the lift through a full cycle during the inspection rather than just looking at it parked. Anchor Bolts and Concrete
Anchors get checked for torque, and we mean actually torquing them to spec with a wrench, not just looking at whether they’re still in the ground. Concrete around each anchor point should be inspected for cracking, spalling, or gaps forming around the bolt. If the concrete is compromised, tightening the anchor further won’t fix the underlying problem — the slab itself needs evaluation, sometimes requiring the lift to be relocated to a different pad.
We also check overall lift-to-floor level and column plumb. A lift that’s shifted slightly out of level puts uneven stress on the whole structure over time, and it’s often the anchors and the concrete that show the first signs. This part of the inspection takes the least time but catches issues that are genuinely dangerous if missed, which is why it’s never optional on our checklist regardless of how new or old the lift is.
Safety Locks and Locking Mechanisms
Safety locks are the single most important mechanical component we test every year. On a two-post lift, that means engaging the locks at several heights and confirming they hold without slipping when the lift is lowered onto them. On four-post lifts with rolling jacks, the same testing applies to the jack’s own locking pins. We physically try to shift the lift onto and off the locks to confirm they’re catching properly rather than just visually confirming they’re present.
We’ve found worn or bent lock pawls on lifts that looked completely fine from the outside. This is one part of the car lift annual maintenance checklist that should never be skipped or rushed, because it’s the last line of defense if a hydraulic or cable system fails. If a lock doesn’t engage cleanly and confidently every single time, the lift needs to be taken out of service until it’s repaired — no exceptions, no working around it for a few more weeks.
Electrical Components and Controls
Motors, switches, and control boxes get inspected for wear, corrosion, and loose connections, especially in shops near Iowa’s coast — winter road salt and moisture that tracks in on tires works its way into control housings over time. We check that emergency stop functions actually work, that up and down controls respond correctly without delay, and that any interlock systems tied to the safety locks are functioning as designed rather than bypassed.
We also look at the overall wiring runs for chafing, especially anywhere cables pass near moving parts of the lift. A pinched or worn wire that hasn’t failed yet is still a problem waiting to happen, and it’s a lot cheaper to reroute or replace in a scheduled inspection than to diagnose after a lift stops responding mid-lift with a vehicle on it.
Building a Realistic Inspection Schedule
Most manufacturers recommend a full inspection annually at minimum, with lighter checks — visual inspection, lubrication points, cable tension — done monthly in between. High-volume shops running lifts multiple times a day should lean toward the more frequent end of that range regardless of what the manual technically requires, because cycle count matters as much as calendar time.
