Start With the Serial Number, Not the Tape Measure
Every bad cable job we’ve been called in to fix started the same way: somebody measured the old cable, ordered something close, and hoped. Equalization cables are specified by overall length, end fitting type, thread pitch, and diameter — and manufacturers changed all four across production runs of the same model name. A Rotary SPO12 from the mid-90s does not take the same cable as an SPO12 built fifteen years later. Order both cables, always. We have never once replaced a single cable and felt good about it. Same goes for sheaves — the grooves wear into a V shape and start slicing new wire rope almost immediately. Tools and Parts to Have Staged Before You Start
Nothing wastes a Saturday faster than getting a lift torn down and discovering you need a tool you don’t own. Here’s our standard kit: a good breaker bar and a full set of deep sockets, two 3/4-inch drive wrenches for the cable adjusting nuts, penetrating oil applied the night before, a bench grinder or cutoff wheel for old seized hardware, cribbing or hardwood blocks, a floor jack rated well above the carriage weight, and a pair of high-quality wire rope cutters. Not bolt cutters, not a hacksaw — real cutters. A hacksawed cable end frays and won’t feed through a sheave.
Parts-wise: both cables, both sheaves if warranted, new cotter pins and hardware, fresh sheave pins, and grease. We also bring anti-seize for the adjuster threads, because the next person to service that lift — maybe you in five years — will thank you. Add safety gear: leather gloves, because broken wire rope strands will absolutely put a hole in your palm, and eye protection for the moment a rusted nut lets go. Securing the Lift Before Anything Comes Loose
This is the section people skip and it’s the one that puts folks in the hospital. On a two-post, the carriages are held at height by the cables and the mechanical safety latches. Once you release cable tension, the latches are all you have — and latches were never designed as the primary support during service work. Our procedure: raise the lift to a comfortable working height, lower it deliberately onto the safety locks so you hear them engage, then add independent support. We use tall jack stands or steel cribbing under each carriage arm assembly, snugged up so the carriage physically cannot travel down.
Kill power at the disconnect and lock it out. Not the switch on the powerunit — the wall disconnect. We’ve watched a well-meaning tech in a busy shop hit an up button while somebody’s arm was inside a column. Tag it. Then bleed off hydraulic pressure per the manual so the cylinder isn’t holding energy. On four-post lifts, the sequencing differs: you’re typically supporting the runways at all four corners and dealing with four cables that route over multiple sheaves, which is why our four-post jobs usually take longer than two-post jobs. Routing the New Cables Correctly
Take photos before you pull anything. Phone photos of every sheave wrap, every crossover point, and every anchor. Better yet, replace one cable at a time so the other stays in place as your reference — then swap the second. That trick alone has saved our techs hours.
Feed the new cable in the same direction the old one came out, and never let it kink. A kinked wire rope is scrap; the strands are permanently deformed and it becomes a fatigue point that will fail early. Keep the cable off the concrete where it can pick up grit, and don’t drag it through the puddle of hydraulic fluid you spilled during teardown. As you route it, spin each sheave by hand to confirm it turns freely and the cable seats in the groove bottom rather than riding up on the flange. Snug the adjusting nuts finger-tight for now — you’re not setting final tension until both cables are in and the carriages are supported evenly. Save the torque work for the tensioning step where you can compare both sides against each other.
Tensioning, Leveling, and the Test Cycle
Tension is where a mediocre job separates from a good one. Both cables need equal tension, and the way we verify it isn’t by feel — it’s by running the lift through full travel and watching the safety latches. Snug both adjusters evenly, remove your supports, then raise the lift a foot and lower it onto the locks. Both sides should drop into their latches at the same moment with the same sound. If one side lands first, you’ve got a tension mismatch. Adjust in small increments and retest.
Then cycle the lift to full height and back down, empty, at least three times. New wire rope stretches during break-in, so recheck tension after those cycles and again after the first loaded lift. We tell shops to look at it again after a week of normal use. Once tension holds steady, load-test with a mid-weight vehicle, raise to full height, lower onto locks, and check that the carriages are level within the manufacturer’s spec — usually measured off the floor at matching points on each arm. Mistakes We Get Called In to Fix
The recurring one is reusing old hardware. Adjusting nuts and cotter pins are pennies; a cable that walks out of adjustment because someone reused a stretched nut is a callback and a safety issue. Second most common: ignoring the sheaves. We’ve pulled brand-new cables off lifts after ninety days because the customer saved sixty dollars by keeping worn sheaves that chewed the new rope apart.
