When a puddle of hydraulic fluid shows up under your two-post or in-ground lift, car lift cylinder leak diagnosis is the first job on the list before you touch anything else. We’ve walked into more Iowa shops than we can count where someone assumed the pump was bad, or the fluid was just “weeping,” when the real problem was a scored cylinder bore or a blown seal that had been getting worse for months. Start With Where the Fluid Is Actually Showing Up

Every car lift cylinder leak diagnosis starts with location, not guesswork. Fluid pooling at the base of the cylinder near the shop floor usually points to a bottom seal or a fitting connection, while fluid tracking down the outside of the cylinder rod almost always means the rod seal or wiper is compromised. If you’re seeing wet residue only at the very top of the cylinder near the piston head, that’s a different story entirely and often signals an internal seal failure that’s letting fluid bypass into the return line instead of dripping externally.

We tell every customer to wipe the cylinder completely clean, run the lift through a full cycle, and then look again. Fluid that reappears immediately after cleaning tells you the leak is active and under pressure, which narrows things down fast. Fluid that takes several cycles to reappear might just be residual seepage from a fitting that needs to be re-torqued rather than a full seal failure. This first step alone eliminates half the guesswork in most calls we get.

Check the Obvious Fittings and Hose Connections First

Before you assume the worst, rule out the cheap fixes. Hydraulic fittings loosen over time from vibration, especially on lifts that see heavy daily use in a commercial bay. A hairline crack in a hose or a loose banjo fitting at the base of the cylinder can mimic a seal leak almost perfectly, and we’ve saved customers a full cylinder teardown more than once just by re-torquing a fitting or swapping a worn crush washer.

Grab a flashlight and inspect every connection point along the hydraulic line from the power unit down to the cylinder itself. Look for shiny wet spots, dried fluid trails, or corrosion buildup, which is common in Iowa shops that deal with road salt tracked in on tires all winter. If every fitting is dry and tight and the leak still shows up at the cylinder body itself, you’re dealing with a genuine seal or cylinder wall issue and it’s time to move to the next step.

Inspect the Cylinder Rod for Scoring and Pitting

A damaged rod surface is one of the most common root causes we find during car lift cylinder leak diagnosis on older two-post lifts. Extend the cylinder fully and run your fingers (carefully, lift powered off) along the exposed rod surface. Any scoring, pitting, or rust will tear up a new seal within days, meaning a reseal job without addressing the rod itself is a waste of time and parts money.

Rod damage usually comes from contaminated fluid, a torn wiper seal letting debris in, or years of exposure without a protective boot in a dusty shop environment. If you find rod damage, plan on either a rod resleeve, a full cylinder replacement, or at minimum a very thorough cleaning and a new wiper seal to prevent immediate recontamination. Skipping this inspection step is the number one reason a reseal job fails again within a few months, and it’s something we always check first when a shop calls us about a repeat leak.

Watch for Drift, Not Just Drips

Some cylinder leaks don’t show up as visible fluid at all — they show up as a lift that slowly settles overnight or drifts down under load during a job. This internal bypass leak happens when the piston seal inside the cylinder is worn enough to let fluid pass from one side to the other without external fluid loss. It’s a sneaky failure mode because the shop floor stays clean, but the lift is actually a safety hazard waiting to happen.

Test this by raising the lift to full height, unloaded, marking the position, and checking it again after several hours. Any noticeable drop means an internal leak even if you can’t find a drip anywhere. This is one of the trickiest parts of car lift cylinder leak diagnosis because it requires patience and a repeatable test rather than a quick visual check, but it’s critical for two-post lifts holding vehicles overnight in a service bay.

Know When a Reseal Kit Is Enough

Not every leak requires a new cylinder. If your diagnosis shows a clean rod surface with no scoring, no internal bore damage, and the leak is isolated to a worn seal or wiper, a reseal kit is often the right call and considerably less expensive than a full replacement. We stock seal kits matched to Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas cylinders, along with the specialty tools needed to pull and reseat the piston correctly.

The catch is that resealing takes the cylinder out of service for at least a day, and it has to be done right — contaminated fluid or a rushed reassembly will have you back in the same spot within weeks. We walk customers through this decision constantly, and honestly, if the cylinder has any visible rod damage or is more than a decade old on a heavy-use commercial lift, replacement is usually the more cost-effective long-term choice.

Fluid Contamination Can Fake a Cylinder Leak

Before you order parts, check your hydraulic fluid itself. Water intrusion, metal shavings, or the wrong fluid viscosity can cause foaming, pressure loss, and seal swelling that looks exactly like a mechanical leak but is really a fluid problem. This is especially common in Iowa shops where humidity swings and unsealed reservoirs let moisture creep into the system over a season.

Drain a sample into a clear container and look for cloudiness, separation, or metal glitter. If the fluid looks contaminated, a full flush and refill with the manufacturer-specified fluid might resolve what looked like a stubborn leak.
