Most manufacturers explicitly warn against extension cords for this reason.

We also recommend thinking about where the lift’s control box will physically sit before the electrician runs conduit. Two-post lifts typically have the power unit mounted to one column, so the circuit should terminate near that column, not in the center of the garage or by the door.
