A good car lift maintenance checklist is the cheapest insurance a shop will ever buy, and we say that as the crew that gets called when nobody had one. The pattern almost never changes. The lifts that fail early aren’t the cheap ones; they’re the ones nobody looked at. Ten minutes a week and an hour a year is the entire difference between a lift that lasts twenty-five years and one that gets condemned at eight.

Why a written checklist beats a good memory
Every shop we walk into believes it inspects its lifts. What most shops actually do is notice problems — a squeal, a shudder, a car that won’t come down level. Noticing is not inspecting. Noticing happens after the wear is already advanced. A written car lift maintenance checklist forces someone to look at parts that are still fine, which is the only time you can act cheaply. Cables get replaced on a schedule instead of after a strand pops. Anchor bolts get torqued before the column starts rocking. Fluid gets topped before the pump starts cavitating and cooking its own seals.
The other reason to write it down is accountability. In a shop with four techs, “somebody checks the lifts” means nobody checks the lifts. We’ve seen 12,000 lb two-post units in busy Iowa shops where the last documented service was the installation paperwork we handed over ourselves years earlier. Print the list, laminate it, hang it on the column, and put initials and a date on it. When ANSI/ALI documentation questions come up — from an insurer, an OSHA visit, or a buyer during a shop sale — that sheet is the only proof that exists. It also gives us something useful to read when we roll in for a repair. A logged history tells us more in thirty seconds than an hour of poking around.
The daily walk-around: sixty seconds, no tools
Before the first car of the day, the tech using the lift should look at four things. Start with the floor around the columns or posts — puddles or streaks of hydraulic fluid mean a cylinder seal, a hose fitting, or a power unit that’s already talking to you. Next, the cables and chains if the lift has them exposed: look for kinks, birdcaging, rust bloom, or a single broken strand. One broken strand is the whole conversation; that cable is done. Third, the arm restraints on a two-post. Swing an arm and feel the gear engage. If it slips or feels vague, the lift is not safe to load.
Fourth, run the lift up empty and listen. A healthy unit sounds boring. Chatter, a hard clunk at the top, or a column that rises noticeably faster than its partner all point to equalization problems. Then lower onto the locks and confirm both sides drop into the same tooth — uneven lock engagement is the single most common finding on our service calls, and it’s usually equalizer cable adjustment rather than anything expensive. None of this requires tools, and it’s the part of any car lift maintenance checklist that gets skipped first when the shop is slammed. It’s also the part that catches the failures that hurt people.
Monthly items worth pulling the wrench out for
Once a month, the checks get slightly more involved but still take under twenty minutes per lift. Grease the slider blocks and the carriage channels, then wipe the columns clean so grit doesn’t grind fresh grease into paste. Iowa shops fight winter salt and summer dust in the same building, and abrasive contamination in the carriage is why we replace so many slide blocks in this state. Check hydraulic fluid at full-down and top it with the fluid the manufacturer actually specifies — most lifts want AW-32 or AW-46, and mixing types is how you swell seals.
Then torque the anchor bolts. Not eyeball them — put a torque wrench on them and confirm the manufacturer’s spec, usually somewhere in the 85 to 110 ft-lb range depending on the model and anchor. Concrete relaxes around anchors over the first year, and a loose base plate transfers every load into fewer bolts. While you’re down there, look at the concrete itself for cracks radiating from the base. Finish by inspecting hoses for abrasion where they cross the overhead or the floor trough, checking the overhead shutoff bar on two-post lifts, and confirming that every safety lock releases and re-engages cleanly. The annual inspection is a different animal
Daily and monthly work is housekeeping. The annual inspection is an evaluation, and under ANSI/ALI ALOIM it’s expected on every commercial lift once a year, performed by a qualified inspector. That means cables come under load measurement, lock mechanisms get disassembled far enough to see pawl and ladder wear, cylinders get checked for drift over a timed hold, and the whole structure gets examined for weld cracks and bent arms. It also means the capacity labels, warning decals and operating manual have to actually be present — a surprising number of failures we document are paperwork and decals, not steel.
We do these inspections all over central Iowa, and we’d rather find problems in January than in the middle of your busiest week. Plan on an hour per lift for a straightforward two-post and longer for inground units or anything with an alignment rack on top. How the checklist changes by lift type
A single generic list gets you most of the way there, but the failure points differ by design. Two-post lifts live and die by cables, equalization, arm restraints and anchors — that’s where 80 percent of our two-post service work sits. Four-post lifts shift the attention to the four lifting cables, the slack-cable safety, and the runway locks; on storage lifts, add the jack tray and the drive-on ramps, which get bent more often than anything else. Scissor and mid-rise units hide their wear inside the pivot pins and bushings, so a wobble side to side matters more on those than any noise.
Mobile column sets bring their own items: battery condition, charger function, wheel and roller wear, and the sync electronics that keep four columns talking to each other. Inground lifts need attention to the containment system and any fluid loss, because a leak underground is an environmental problem and not just a repair. Brand matters less than people think — a Rotary SPO12 and a Challenger CL10 want the same care — but capacity and duty cycle matter a lot. A lift doing 15 cars a day needs more frequent attention than the same model doing three. What we find most often on Iowa service calls
If we had to rank it: uneven lock engagement from cable stretch, low or contaminated hydraulic fluid, loose anchor bolts, worn slider blocks, and arm restraints that no longer engage. Every one of those is a checklist item. Every one of those is cheap to correct at the point we’d catch it and expensive to correct after it takes something else with it. A cable that snaps can bend a carriage. A dry slide block can gouge a column. A neglected power unit can burn a motor that costs more than five years of fluid.
The other recurring find is age without records. We get calls from body shops in central Iowa that bought a used two-post with no manual, no serial plate and no idea what capacity it’s rated for. That’s a hard place to start, because we can’t certify what we can’t identify. Putting the checklist to work without adding a job to somebody’s plate
The checklists that survive are the ones that take less time than complaining about them. Keep the daily portion to under two minutes and assign it to whoever opens the bay. Put the monthly items on a recurring calendar reminder for one specific person, not a group. Stock the consumables ahead of time so nobody skips a step waiting on fluid or grease.
And be honest about the line between maintenance and repair. Greasing, torquing and topping off is shop work.
