Cracked, chunked-out, or glazed-over rubber is the obvious sign, but there are subtler ones too. If a vehicle rocks slightly once it’s up, if you’re hearing a scraping or grinding sound as the pads contact the vehicle, or if the pad surface has compressed unevenly on one side, it’s time for new pads. Worn threads on screw pads are another red flag — if the pad wobbles on the screw before it even touches the vehicle, that’s lost precision you don’t want to work around.
