The car lift installation process is the part most buyers think about least and worry about most. You spend weeks comparing capacities, column heights, and arm configurations, then the freight truck backs into your lot and suddenly the question becomes: what happens now? Before Anyone Shows Up: The Site Survey

Every good install starts with a conversation that happens weeks earlier. We ask about ceiling height at the lowest obstruction — not the peak, the lowest truss, light fixture, or overhead door track. We ask about bay width from wall to wall and column to column, because a two-post that fits on paper can still leave you unable to open a driver’s door. We ask about the electrical service: single phase or three phase, what voltage, where the nearest panel sits, and whether there is a dedicated circuit available or whether an electrician needs to run one. We also ask about the concrete, which is the single biggest variable in the whole job.

Most manufacturers want a minimum slab thickness and compressive strength for their anchors to hold rated load. In older Iowa shops we frequently find four inches of slab where the spec sheet calls for more, or a slab poured in sections with a control joint running exactly where a column needs to land. We would rather find that out during the survey than on install morning. When the slab does not measure up, the fix is usually a saw-cut pad poured to spec and cured before we arrive. Skipping this step is the most expensive shortcut in the entire car lift installation process, because a pulled anchor under load is not a warranty conversation — it is a safety incident.

Delivery, Unloading, and Inventory

Lifts arrive by freight, usually on a flatbed or in a dry van with a liftgate, and they arrive heavy. A pair of two-post columns with a power unit, arms, and hardware can run well over a thousand pounds. Four-post and heavy-duty column sets go much higher. We bring the equipment to get it off the truck safely — forklift or skid loader when the site allows, engine hoists and pipe rollers when it does not. If your driveway is gravel and thaws into soup in March, tell us. We have unloaded lifts onto plywood runners more than once in central Iowa spring weather.

Once everything is on the floor, we inventory it against the packing list before a single bolt turns. Missing anchor bolts, a shorted count of arm pins, a crushed cover plate from a forklift tine — these things happen in freight, and they are far easier to resolve at hour one than at hour six with a car waiting to go up. We also check for concealed damage on the columns and carriages, because freight claims have deadlines and photographs taken at unload are worth far more than a phone call three days later. This inventory step is short but it is genuinely part of the car lift installation process, not a formality.

Layout, Squaring, and Setting Columns

Layout is where experience shows. We chalk the bay based on the manufacturer’s template, then check it against the real world: where the door swings, where the air drop hangs, where the technician actually wants to stand when pulling a transmission. On a two-post we set the column spacing per spec, then measure diagonals to square the pair. If the diagonals do not match, the carriages will not travel evenly and the overhead or floor plate will fight you for the rest of its service life.

Then we drill. Anchor holes go through the slab with a rotary hammer, get blown and brushed clean, and take the manufacturer’s specified anchors torqued to the manufacturer’s specified value — not “tight,” a number on a torque wrench. Almost every install needs shims, because no shop floor in Iowa is perfectly level, and slabs are usually pitched toward a drain on purpose. We shim under the base plates to bring each column plumb, and manufacturers limit how much shim stack is allowed before the anchor engagement is compromised. Getting the columns plumb and the anchors torqued correctly is the structural heart of the whole job.

Hydraulics, Cables, and Electrical Hookup

With the columns standing, we move to the systems that make them move. Hydraulic lines get routed and connected, the power unit is mounted, and the reservoir is filled with the correct fluid — usually a specified hydraulic oil or ATF depending on brand, and using the wrong one is a quiet way to shorten seal life. Equalization cables and sheaves get installed and tensioned. On a two-post, cable tension is what keeps both carriages rising together; on a four-post, it is what keeps the runways level.

Electrical is where we draw a clear line. We terminate at the power unit and handle the lift-side wiring, but the branch circuit itself — panel work, conduit, disconnect — is a licensed electrician’s job, and we will coordinate directly with yours or recommend someone local. We also verify motor rotation on three-phase units, because a backward-running pump builds no pressure and confuses everyone for ten minutes. Once power is on, we bleed the hydraulic system by cycling the lift several times empty, watching for air in the lines and any weep at fittings. It is a slow, boring part of the car lift installation process and it is also the part that prevents callbacks.

Safety Locks, Adjustment, and Load Testing

Every lift we install has a mechanical lock system that is entirely independent of hydraulic pressure, and adjusting it correctly is non-negotiable. We verify that locks engage at every position, that they release cleanly and simultaneously, and that the audible click a technician relies on is actually there at each step. On overhead two-post units we set the shutoff bar so the carriage stops before a vehicle roof contacts the crossbeam. On four-post units we confirm the runways sit level within tolerance across all four corners.

Then we load test. We put a real vehicle on it — ideally something in the middle of the capacity range — and cycle it up and down several times, stopping on locks at multiple heights. We check for drift over several minutes, listen to the pump under load, watch the cables, and re-torque the anchors after the first loaded cycles because anchors can settle. We also verify the lift lowers at a controlled rate and that the manual lock release works the way the manual says. If something is off, this is when it gets fixed, not after we drive back to Ames. Documentation, Training, and ALI Certification

Paperwork is not filler. We complete the manufacturer’s installation checklist, record anchor torque values, note shim stacks, and leave the operation manual and lock-maintenance schedule with you rather than in the crate that goes to the dumpster. If your lift is ALI Gold Label certified, we install the labels and capacity placards where an inspector — and more importantly, a new technician — will actually see them. Shops that carry commercial insurance or work under a fleet contract are often asked to produce this documentation, and it is much easier to hand over a folder than to reconstruct history later.

Then we train. Not a two-minute demo — we walk every person who will use the lift through arm positioning for the vehicles they actually service, through lock engagement, through the daily and monthly checks, and through what abnormal sounds and behaviors mean. We show them the lowering procedure and the emergency lock release. In our experience the single most common cause of premature lift failure is not a manufacturing defect; it is an untrained operator loading it wrong or ignoring a cable that has started to fray. Timelines, Costs, and What Slows a Job Down

A straightforward two-post install in a bay with good concrete, adequate ceiling height, and power already run is typically a single-day job for a two-person crew. Four-post lifts often go faster on the mechanical side but take longer to level. Inground lifts and heavy-duty mobile column sets are their own category — inground work involves excavation, drainage considerations, and cure time, and it should be planned in weeks, not hours. Installation labor is usually quoted as a range depending on travel distance from Ames, site access, and whether concrete or electrical work is in scope.

What slows jobs down, in order of how often we see it: concrete that does not meet spec, power that is not run and inspected before we arrive, ceiling obstructions nobody measured, and freight damage discovered on site. Every one of those is preventable with a real site survey.
