Start With the Serial Tag, Not the Part
Almost everyone starts a parts search from the wrong end. They look at the broken piece, describe it as “the arm thing that holds the pad,” and hope somebody recognizes it. The faster route is the data plate. On a two-post, it’s usually riveted to the powerside column somewhere between waist and shoulder height, sometimes under the control box, sometimes on the inside face where you’d never notice it. On a four-post it’s often on the powerside leg or the crossmember near the power unit. That little plate carries the model designation, the serial number, and frequently a manufacture date — and those three items narrow the parts catalog from thousands of SKUs down to a handful.
Why does it matter so much? Because manufacturers revise components mid-production without changing the model name. Photograph Everything Before You Disassemble
Take pictures. Then take more. We can identify a component from a decent photo faster than from three paragraphs of description, and the photos cost you nothing. Shoot the serial tag straight-on with good light so the stamped characters read clearly. Shoot the failed part in place before you remove it, because the surrounding geometry tells us more than the part alone — how a cable routes, which side the sheave sits on, whether the arm is a three-stage or two-stage. When the Serial Tag Is Gone
Plenty of the equipment we support is old enough that the tag rusted off, got sandblasted during a repaint, or disappeared under twenty years of undercoating overspray. It’s not a dead end. We identify unbadged lifts constantly by working from physical characteristics: column height and profile, the shape of the base plate and its bolt pattern, arm configuration (symmetric versus asymmetric, two-stage versus three-stage front arms), overhead versus floor-plate cable routing, and the style of the lock ladder inside the column. Measurements help enormously here. Give us overall column height, distance between columns, extended and collapsed arm reach, and the diameter of the arm pin if you can get calipers on it. Photograph the base plate and any casting marks or stamped numbers on the carriage — a lot of older lifts carry a foundry number that maps back to a production run. Match Voltage and Phase Before Ordering Power Units
Power units are where the expensive mistakes happen. A replacement unit that’s mechanically perfect and electrically wrong is a return, a delay, and a shop that stays down another week. Before ordering, read the motor data plate on the existing unit: voltage, phase, horsepower, and RPM. Then verify what’s actually at the wall, because plenty of shops have had electrical work done since the lift went in. Single-phase 208-230V is by far the most common in independent garages. Three-phase shows up in dealerships and larger commercial buildings. They are not interchangeable, and a three-phase motor on single-phase service simply will not run.
Also check the reservoir capacity and the mounting pattern. A two-post using a 2.5-gallon tank generally won’t be happy with a unit sized for a four-post’s longer stroke, and bolt spacing on the mounting bracket varies between generations even within one brand. Note the port size and thread type on the pressure outlet, and whether the unit has an integrated lowering valve or a remote one. On many older Rotary and Challenger installs, we end up supplying a modern replacement unit plus an adapter fitting and a new hose — which is fine, as long as we know going in. Take one clear photo of the whole power unit assembly with the cover off and you’ve answered ninety percent of these questions at once.
Don’t Substitute Safety Components
We’ll happily sell you a generic hose, a common fitting, or a universal rubber pad. We will not tell you it’s fine to fabricate a lock latch, splice a lift cable, or run a cylinder past a scored bore because a seal kit is cheaper. Safety-critical components on a vehicle lift are engineered to specification and tested as part of a system, and a shop-made substitute voids whatever certification the lift carries and puts whoever is standing under it at real risk. This isn’t a liability disclaimer — it’s the reason we do this work the way we do.
The practical version: locks, latches, cables, chains, arm pins, cylinders, and structural weldments get OEM or OEM-equivalent replacements, period. Wear pads, hoses, fittings, hardware, and cosmetic items have reasonable aftermarket options that we’re glad to recommend when they save you money without changing how the lift behaves.
