Car lift power unit troubleshooting is the single most common service call we take, and it almost always starts the same way: somebody in a shop pushes the up button, the motor makes a noise, and the lift does not move. We are Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, Iowa, and between installs and road calls across the state we have opened up more power units than we can count — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas, and a fair number of no-name imports somebody bought off a marketplace listing. The good news is that most of what looks like a dead power unit is not a dead power unit at all. It is fluid, wiring, a stuck valve, or a leak somewhere downstream. Here is how we work through it.

Start With the Three Cheap Checks Before You Blame the Pump

Before anyone pulls a power unit off the column, we run three checks that cost nothing. First, fluid level. A hydraulic reservoir that looks full when the lift is down can be well short when the carriage is up, because all that oil is out in the cylinders. Check level with the lift fully lowered, and use the manufacturer’s spec — most units want AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil, and a few older ones will tolerate ATF. Low fluid is responsible for more slow-lift complaints than any component failure we see.

Second, voltage at the motor under load. A 220V single-phase unit that reads fine at rest can sag badly when the motor pulls inrush current, especially on a long undersized extension run or a shared circuit in an older Iowa farm shop. Third, look for the obvious: a tripped breaker, a loose neutral, a pushbutton with a corroded contact, or an overhead cutoff switch someone bumped. We have driven ninety minutes to find a lift “failure” that was a wire nut backed off inside the pushbutton box. Doing this triage first is the fastest part of any car lift power unit troubleshooting job, and it keeps you from replacing a perfectly good pump.

Motor Hums or Buzzes but the Lift Will Not Rise

This is the classic call. The contactor clicks, the motor makes a low hum, and nothing happens. Nine times out of ten that is an electrical symptom, not a hydraulic one. A humming single-phase motor that will not spin usually means a failed starting capacitor or a bad centrifugal switch inside the motor. The capacitor is a cheap part and a five-minute swap on most units — if it is bulged, leaking, or reads far off its rated microfarads, replace it and retest before you go further.

If the motor does spin freely but the lift still will not go up, move to the pump side. Pull the suction filter or screen and look at it. A screen packed with varnish and debris starves the gear pump and produces exactly this behavior: motor runs, no pressure. We have also found the intake tube cracked or knocked loose from the pump housing, which lets the pump suck air instead of oil. On three-phase installations, check rotation — a power unit wired backwards will run smooth and quiet and build zero pressure. Swapping any two legs at the motor fixes it. Slow Lifting, Chattering, or a Lift That Only Goes Partway

A lift that used to reach full height in 45 seconds and now takes two minutes is telling you something specific. Slow and steady across the whole travel usually points to internal pump wear or a bypassing relief valve. Slow with a jerky, chattering motion almost always means air in the system or aerated oil, which comes from low fluid, a loose suction fitting, or a return line dumping above the oil level in the reservoir.

A lift that rises fine to chest height and then stalls is a different animal. That is a load-versus-pressure problem: the pump can generate enough pressure to move the empty carriage but not enough to finish with a vehicle on it. Check the relief setting, and check for a cylinder bypassing internally — a worn piston seal lets oil cross over instead of pushing the carriage. On two-post lifts, we also look hard at the equalizer cables, because a badly tensioned or binding cable adds mechanical drag that mimics a hydraulic problem. Good car lift power unit troubleshooting means separating hydraulic weakness from mechanical resistance before you order parts. Feel the reservoir after a few cycles too — oil that is uncomfortably hot signals the pump is working against something.

Lift Drifts Down: Where the Oil Is Actually Going

Every week somebody tells us their lift will not hold. A carriage that settles an inch and stops is usually just cylinder rod seal weep or normal cable stretch settling onto the locks. A carriage that walks down steadily over ten minutes has an internal leak path, and there are only a few candidates: the check valve in the power unit, the lowering solenoid valve, or the cylinder piston seals.

The way we isolate it is simple. Raise the lift, shut the power off, and mark the carriage position. If it drifts with the power unit hoses disconnected and capped, the leak is in the cylinder. If it holds when capped but drifts when connected, the leak is in the power unit — usually debris holding the check valve off its seat, or a lowering valve that is not fully closing because a piece of grit or a torn o-ring got in there. Pulling and cleaning the check valve cartridge fixes a surprising number of these. Documenting drift rate before you start is one of the more useful habits in lift power unit troubleshooting, because it gives you a number to test against after the repair instead of a guess.

Car Lift Power Unit Troubleshooting on Leaks and Noise

External leaks are the easy ones to diagnose and the easiest to ignore too long. Oil weeping around the pump-to-reservoir gasket, the return fitting, or the tank seam is a fix-now item, because losing fluid quietly turns into aeration, cavitation, and pump damage. Clean everything with brake cleaner, run the lift, and watch where the fresh oil appears — chasing an old greasy trail wastes an afternoon.

Noise is a diagnostic tool. A steady whine that rises with load is normal pump sound. A rattling, gravelly growl means cavitation — the pump is pulling air, so go back to fluid level and suction side. A sharp metallic knock at the top of travel is usually the cylinder hitting its internal stop, not a power unit fault at all. And a loud buzz from the valve body when you hit the down button is a solenoid coil that is energizing but not moving the spool. In our experience with car lift power unit troubleshooting across central Iowa, matching sound to cause saves more diagnostic time than any test gauge, though we still put a gauge on the pressure port whenever the symptom is vague. A gauge turns opinion into data, and it tells you in thirty seconds whether the pump is making rated pressure.

Rebuild, Replace, or Retrofit: Making the Call

Once you know what failed, the economics get straightforward. Capacitors, coils, filters, check valve cartridges, seal kits, and pushbuttons are all repair items — parts we stock and ship, and jobs a competent shop tech can do in an hour. A worn gear pump, a burned motor, or a rusted-through reservoir on a fifteen-year-old unit is a different conversation. At that point the labor to rebuild often approaches the cost of a complete replacement power unit that arrives assembled, tested, and warrantied.

The other factor is what lift it is bolted to. On a current-production Rotary or Challenger, OEM replacement is clean and we can usually get it out same or next day. On an older or imported lift, we look at port sizes, motor voltage, reservoir capacity, and mounting pattern and often fit a quality aftermarket unit instead. What we will not do is put a new power unit on a lift with frayed cables, cracked welds, or bad locks — that is spending money on the wrong problem. Any honest car lift power unit troubleshooting visit ends with an inspection of the whole lift, not just the pump, and sometimes that inspection changes the recommendation entirely.

When to Stop and Call Us

There is a line between maintenance and liability. Fluid, filters, capacitors, and fittings are fair game for shop staff. Anything that involves a loaded lift, a suspect lock mechanism, cylinder disassembly, or opening a valve body under pressure is where we would rather show up ourselves. Lifts hold thousands of pounds over people, and a shortcut there is not worth it.
