Why Concrete Comes First in Any Car Lift Installation

Every two-post, four-post, or scissor lift relies on anchors driven into the slab to hold the columns in place, which means the concrete itself is doing the structural work — not just the bolts. Reading a Concrete Spec Sheet Before You Buy

Every lift we sell comes with a manufacturer spec sheet listing exact concrete requirements, and we walk customers through it before checkout, not after. These sheets typically specify minimum thickness, minimum PSI strength, and anchor embedment depth, and they differ between brands and models. A BendPak or Atlas lift built for a home garage generally has different slab demands than a Rotary or Challenger commercial two-post rated for daily shop use.

We’ve found that the biggest confusion isn’t the numbers themselves but applying the wrong spec sheet to the wrong lift. Customers sometimes research a lift online, find a general concrete guideline, and assume it applies to the specific model they’re buying. It usually doesn’t exactly match. That’s why we always confirm the exact model before quoting your installation and cross-check it against your slab. If your garage floor is original to a house built decades ago, there’s a good chance it won’t meet the PSI rating for a commercial-grade two-post lift without reinforcement or a new pour in the install footprint. We’d rather catch that during the quote stage.

Electrical Power Needs for Common Lift Types

Most residential two-post and four-post lifts run on a dedicated 220-volt single-phase circuit, similar to what a welder or dryer uses. Anchor spacing is dictated by the lift’s base plate design, and it has to land on solid, uncracked concrete — not on a control joint or the edge of a poured section. We map out anchor locations against your existing slab layout before scheduling installation, because a footprint that looks fine on paper can run straight through a joint once you’re standing in the garage. If that happens, we either shift the lift’s position slightly or discuss adding a reinforced concrete pad in that specific footprint.

Ceiling height, overhead doors, and clearance from garage walls also factor into where a two-post or four-post lift can physically go, so we consider layout at the same time we’re evaluating the slab. It’s rarely just one factor in isolation.

What Happens If Your Garage Isn’t Ready

A lot of Iowa garages, especially older ones, don’t meet spec on the first look, and that’s completely normal — it doesn’t mean you can’t get a lift installed. Sometimes the fix is pouring a new reinforced pad just under the lift’s footprint rather than repouring the whole floor, which keeps costs and disruption down.
