Why a Written Schedule Beats Good Intentions
Nearly every shop owner we meet intends to maintain their equipment. The problem is that lift maintenance is invisible work — nobody thanks you for it, no customer is waiting on it, and it never shows up as a line on an invoice. So it slides. We’ve walked into shops in Des Moines, Waterloo, and small towns off Highway 30 where the lift had run daily for six or seven years and never had a drop of grease put on a trolley or a single cable tension check. It still went up. It still came down. That’s exactly what makes it dangerous — hydraulic lifts fail slowly and quietly right up until they don’t.

When the daily walk-around is printed and hanging on the column, and one person’s initials go in the box, it gets done. The Daily Walk-Around: Sixty Seconds, Every Morning
Daily checks should take about a minute, and they’re all sensory. Look at the floor under the power unit — a fresh puddle or a wet streak down the column means a seal, fitting, or hose is going. Look at the cables where they enter the sheaves and check for broken strands, kinks, or a fuzzy, frayed appearance. Look at the arm restraint pins and make sure they drop and hold. Look at the rubber pads or flip-up adapters for cracks and missing chunks, because a pad that slips is how a truck ends up on its rocker panel.
Then listen and feel. Raise the lift empty a couple of feet. The locks should click evenly on both sides as it climbs — uneven clicking usually means the carriages have drifted out of level and the equalizer cables need adjusting. A groaning or chattering column often means dry slide blocks. A pump that runs but lifts slowly is usually low on fluid or pulling air. None of this requires tools. Techs who use the lift all day are the best early-warning system in the building, but only if they’ve been told what to look for and told that speaking up won’t get them chewed out for slowing production.
Monthly Tasks Most Iowa Shops Skip
The monthly items are where we find the most neglect. Grease the arm pivot pins and the trolley slide blocks per your manual — a few pumps is plenty, and on most two-post units it takes under five minutes for the whole lift. Check hydraulic fluid level with the lift fully lowered, not raised, or you’ll overfill it and blow a seal fitting. Torque-check the anchor bolts. This one matters enormously in Iowa, where freeze-thaw cycles work on concrete every winter and where a lot of older shop slabs are thinner than the four inches of 3,000 PSI the manufacturer specified. We’ve pulled anchors out by hand in buildings that looked perfectly solid.
Also inspect the lock latch mechanism and the cable ends where they thread into the carriage. Cables stretch as they break in, and a lift that was perfectly synchronized at installation will be out of level after the first several months of use. Correcting it monthly keeps the load balanced across both columns instead of letting one side carry more than its share. Quarterly and Semi-Annual Deep Checks
Every three to six months, plan on a longer session with the lift out of service for an hour. Pull the column covers and inspect the full length of each cable, not just the visible ends. Look for corrosion at the low point where moisture collects, flat spots where a cable has run over a worn sheave, and any broken wires. The rule we use: more than a few broken strands in one lay length, or any kinking, and the cable set gets replaced. Cables are cheap relative to a dropped vehicle, and we always replace them in matched sets rather than one at a time.
Check sheave bearings for play and rough rotation, inspect hoses for abrasion and bulging, and clean the hydraulic reservoir breather. Test the automatic lowering-speed control and the overhead shutoff bar. On inground and older cylinder-in-floor units, this is also when you check for fluid loss that isn’t showing on the floor — an underground leak is an environmental problem before it’s a mechanical one, and it’s worth catching early. An annual inspection follows the ANSI/ALI ALCTV and ALOIM standards, covers the structure, hydraulics, controls, safety devices, anchoring, and labeling, and produces a written record with any deficiencies flagged. It’s what your insurance carrier wants to see, and in shops with employees it’s the difference between a defensible maintenance program and an assumption.

A smaller number fail for something serious — cracked welds, inadequate anchoring, or lock latches that no longer engage. Either way you leave with a document and a plan. A home lift that raises a project car a dozen times a year does not need the same interval as a shop lift cycling forty times a day. But it does need attention, and the failure mode is different. Equipment that sits is equipment that corrodes. Unheated Iowa garages swing from humid summers to sub-zero winters, and condensation forms on cables, sheaves, and cylinder rods every time the temperature crosses the dew point. We’ve replaced cables on ten-year-old four-post lifts with maybe two hundred cycles on them purely because of rust.
For home use we recommend a compressed routine: the full daily walk-around before every single use, since “daily” for you might be monthly. Grease and fluid check twice a year. Cable and anchor inspection annually. Wipe cylinder rods and cables with a light oil before winter, and if the lift stores a vehicle long-term, lower it onto the locks rather than leaving the hydraulics holding load.
