Before you assume you need a whole new latch assembly, walk through the equipment methodically. Understand What the Latch Is Actually Doing
Every two-post and four-post lift uses some version of the same idea: a spring-loaded pawl or bar rides up a notched column or rack as the carriage rises, and it drops into a slot to mechanically hold the load if the hydraulic system loses pressure. It is not decorative and it is not optional equipment — it’s the last line of defense between a vehicle staying in the air and a vehicle coming down on someone. Good car lift safety latch troubleshooting starts with accepting that this part has one job, and if it’s not doing that job reliably, the lift does not get used until it’s fixed.
On most Rotary and Challenger two-post lifts, the latch is tied to a cable that runs to a release handle at the base of one column. Raise the lift and the latch bar rides freely over each notch, clicking as it passes, until you stop raising and let it settle down onto a step. Four-post lifts and many mid-rise and scissor lifts use a similar notched-bar or ratchet-strip design near the columns or the ramps. When you understand this basic geometry, most of what looks mysterious about a latch that won’t catch or won’t release turns into a straightforward mechanical check.
The Latch Won’t Engage on the Way Up
This is the complaint we hear most often, and it usually comes down to one of three things: a bent or worn latch pawl, a rack or column notch that’s packed with grease and shop debris, or a release cable that’s been adjusted too tight and is holding the latch up out of the way even when you’re not touching the handle. Start by cleaning the notched rail with a wire brush and some solvent — you’d be surprised how much oil, dirt, and old grease can build up in there over a few years and simply keep the pawl from dropping.
If the rail is clean and the latch still won’t drop, check the release cable adjustment at the handle. There should be slack in the cable when the handle is untouched; if it’s pulled taut at rest, the latch is being held open constantly. This is one of the most common findings in our car lift safety latch troubleshooting calls, and it’s a five-minute adjustment once you know to look for it. If the pawl itself looks worn round on the engaging edge instead of squared off, it needs to be replaced rather than adjusted — a rounded latch can slip under load even when it looks like it’s caught.
The Latch Engages But Won’t Release
A latch that grabs fine but won’t let go under the release handle is usually a cable or spring problem, not a latch problem. Cables stretch and fray over time, and if the housing gets kinked or corroded, the cable can bind inside it even though it still pulls. Disconnect the cable at the latch end and work it by hand; if it moves freely there but not at the handle, the cable or its housing is the culprit and needs replacing rather than lubricating.
Springs are the other common cause. The latch pawl usually rides on a return spring that pulls it back down after release; if that spring is weak, stretched, or broken, the latch can hang up in the open or partially open position. We also see this on lifts that sat outside or in an unheated shop through an Iowa winter — cold, stiff cable housings and gummed-up springs are a seasonal issue we deal with every year once the temperature drops. Warming the shop and re-lubricating with a lift-rated grease, not household oil, usually restores smooth operation.
Uneven Latching Between Columns
On a two-post lift, both columns need to latch at the same notch height, or the carriage sits crooked and puts side load on the arms and the vehicle. If one side catches a notch higher or lower than the other, check the equalizer cable first — a stretched or slipping equalizer cable is the single most common reason for uneven latching, and it’s also a safety issue independent of the latch itself. Adjust or replace the equalizer cable before touching the latch hardware, because a misaligned carriage can make a perfectly good latch look defective.
If the equalizer is fine and one column still latches differently than the other, inspect that column’s pawl and rack separately. Wear doesn’t happen evenly, especially on lifts that see one side loaded more often, such as shops that always drive vehicles in the same direction. When the Latch Skips or Chatters
A latch that clicks past several notches before catching, or chatters audibly as it rides up, is telling you the pawl spring tension or pivot point has changed. Sometimes this is simple wear at the pivot pin, which lets the pawl float instead of riding tight against the rack. Other times it’s a bent pawl arm from an impact, which happens more than people admit when a lift arm gets bumped hard during vehicle positioning. Either way, this is not a lift to keep using while you decide whether to fix it — skipping is exactly the failure mode that leads to a latch grabbing a notch under shock load instead of settling smoothly.
We recommend pulling the pawl assembly and checking the pivot pin and bushing for play whenever you notice chatter. A little bit of wear at that pivot translates into a lot of imprecision at the notch, and replacement hardware is inexpensive compared to what happens if the latch fails to catch cleanly during a full unload.
Routine Checks That Prevent Latch Problems
Most of the service calls we run could have been caught during a routine inspection. Every time you raise the lift for the day’s first job, listen for the click at each notch and watch that both sides catch evenly. Once a month, clean the notched rails and put a light coat of the manufacturer’s recommended grease on the moving latch components — not the sliding rail surfaces, just the pawl and pivot. Twice a year, pull the release cable cover back and inspect for fraying or rust, especially if your shop runs humid or salty in winter from tracked-in road treatment.
