Why a Car Lift Site Survey Checklist Matters Before You Buy

Most lift problems we get called to fix trace back to something that should have been caught before delivery. A car lift site survey checklist forces you to answer the hard questions before money changes hands — how tall is the ceiling, how thick and how old is the slab, where’s the electrical panel, and how wide is the bay door the lift has to travel through. Skip this step and you risk ordering equipment that physically can’t go where you want it.

We’ve seen shops order an inground lift for a slab with radiant heat lines nobody mapped, and home garage owners order a two-post that clears the ceiling by inches but not enough for a raised truck. A proper checklist also protects your investment — lifts anchored into undersized or cracked concrete void the manufacturer’s warranty and create a genuine safety hazard. Running through the checklist first means the equipment you order matches the space you actually have, not the space you assumed you had. It also speeds up permitting in towns that require an engineer’s slab sign-off, since you’ll already have the thickness and rebar details on hand instead of scrambling for them later.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

Every car lift site survey checklist starts with the tape measure pointed up. Measure from the floor to the lowest overhead obstruction — not just the ceiling itself, but light fixtures, HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, garage door tracks, and support beams. Two-post lifts typically need a minimum ceiling height, and that number grows once you account for the vehicle’s height when fully raised plus a safety margin above the highest point.

We ask customers to measure at the exact spot where each post will sit, not just the center of the bay, because older buildings often have sloped or uneven ceilings. If you’re running a full-size truck or an SUV with a roof rack, add that height on top of the lift’s rated rise. Four-post lifts and mid-rise scissor lifts have different clearance math since the vehicle rides higher relative to the platform. This is one of the fastest ways to disqualify certain models before you fall in love with a price, so it belongs at the very top of any car lift site survey checklist you run yourself.

Concrete Slab Thickness and Condition

The floor is doing all the structural work, and it’s the item most often skipped by DIY buyers. We need slab thickness, age, and condition — cracks, prior patch jobs, control joints near the anchor pattern, and whether it’s post-tensioned or has rebar or wire mesh. Most two-post lifts need a minimum slab thickness of unreinforced, properly cured concrete, and four-post or heavier commercial lifts typically want more.

If your garage was poured decades ago or you’re not sure of the spec, we recommend a core sample or at minimum a visual inspection by someone who’s anchored lifts before. Anchoring into a slab that’s too thin, too old, or cracked near the bolt pattern is the single biggest cause of lift failures we see in the field, and it’s entirely preventable with an honest slab check during the site survey. We also check for slope — most garage floors have some drainage pitch, and it needs to fall within the lift manufacturer’s allowable range or shims and leveling become part of the install plan.

Electrical and Power Requirements

Lifts need dedicated power, and the requirement changes based on model and voltage. We confirm what’s already run to the bay, whether a subpanel or dedicated circuit is needed, and how far the power source is from where the lift will sit. Running conduit across a finished floor after the lift is already anchored is a headache everyone wants to avoid.

This part of the checklist also covers whether you want single-phase or three-phase power, since commercial shops sometimes have three-phase available that residential garages won’t. We coordinate directly with electricians on larger installs so the rough-in happens before the lift arrives, not after.

Bay Width, Door Clearance, and Vehicle Path

Getting the lift into the building is its own logistical puzzle. We measure door width and height, hallway or bay clearance if the lift has to be walked through an interior space, and turning radius if a forklift or pallet jack is involved. Post spacing also needs enough room on both sides for full-size trucks and dually vehicles to open doors and for a technician to walk around comfortably.

Intended Use and Vehicle Weight Ratings

What you’re lifting determines the model, not just the space you have.
