We get calls about this almost every week, from home-garage BendPak owners to dealership service managers running a row of Rotary two-post lifts. The good news is that safety lock problems are usually mechanical and fixable without a full teardown. The bad news is that skipping the diagnosis and just forcing the lift down is how people get hurt. What the Safety Lock Is Actually Doing

Before you start car lift safety locks troubleshooting, it helps to know what the mechanism is for. On a two-post lift, the safety lock is a spring-loaded pawl or dog that rides along a notched bar or column ratchet as the carriage rises. It’s designed to catch automatically at set intervals, so if the hydraulic system ever loses pressure, the vehicle rests on solid steel teeth instead of oil. Four-post lifts and scissor lifts use a similar idea with a locking bar or ratchet rail under the runways. None of this is decorative — it’s the entire reason a lift is rated to hold a vehicle safely with someone underneath it.

The lock only releases when you pull a cable, rope, or lever that lifts the pawl clear of the notches, usually while you’re lowering. That release mechanism is where the vast majority of complaints originate, not the pawl itself. Lift Won’t Lower Past a Certain Point

This is the single most common complaint we hear, and it almost always traces back to the release side, not the lock itself. If the cable or rod that pulls the pawl away from the rack is stretched, kinked, or has come loose from its anchor point, the lock re-engages every time you try to lower, even after you’ve cleared it once. Check the release handle at the base of the post — pull it and watch whether the cable actually moves the pawl arm on both columns evenly. On many two-post lifts, one side releases fine while the other lags, which tells you immediately which cable needs adjustment or replacement.

Rust and grime buildup on the ratchet bar itself is another frequent cause, especially on lifts near open bay doors in Iowa winters where road salt and slush get tracked in constantly. A pawl that’s caked in dried grease or rust won’t lift cleanly even when the cable pulls correctly. We recommend cleaning and lightly lubricating the rack and pawl assembly on a set schedule, not just when something jams. If you’ve already ruled out the cable and the rack is clean, the pawl spring itself may be weak or broken, which requires replacement rather than adjustment.

Lock Won’t Engage At All

The flip side is scarier: a lock that fails to catch as the lift rises, leaving the carriage supported by hydraulic pressure alone. This is a stop-work situation, full stop. Common culprits include a bent or worn pawl that no longer seats into the notches, a release cable that’s been left too tight so it’s holding the pawl retracted even during the lift stroke, or a mounting bracket that’s shifted out of alignment after years of vibration and use.

If your lift chatters past each notch without a solid click, or you can visibly see the pawl riding above the rack instead of dropping into it, take the vehicle down immediately and tag the lift out of service. Uneven Locking Between Posts

On two-post lifts, both columns are supposed to lock at the same notch simultaneously. When one side locks a step higher or lower than the other, the vehicle sits on a slant and stresses the arms and cables unevenly. This usually points to unequal cable tension between the two release cables, or one column’s equalizer cable having stretched more than the other over time. It can also happen if the lift was installed on a slightly uneven slab without proper shimming, though that’s less common with a professional installation.

Fixing uneven locking means adjusting cable tension at the turnbuckle or clevis on the shorter side until both pawls drop at the same height during a slow, careful test cycle with no vehicle on the lift. This is not a fix to attempt with a car loaded — do all adjustment testing empty, and cycle the lift multiple times to confirm consistency before trusting it with a vehicle again.

Noisy or Sticky Locks

A loud bang or grinding noise when the lock engages doesn’t necessarily mean failure, but it’s telling you something needs attention. Dry pawls, worn ratchet teeth, or a pivot pin that’s lost its bushing all produce noise before they produce outright failure. We treat noise as an early warning stage of car lift safety locks troubleshooting rather than something to ignore because the lift still technically works. Lubricate the pivot points with a lift-rated grease, not general-purpose oil that attracts more dirt.

If the noise persists after cleaning and lubrication, inspect the pawl edge and rack teeth for wear under a flashlight. Rounded or chipped teeth mean the mechanism is nearing the end of its service life and replacement parts should be ordered before the lock stops holding reliably. Waiting until it fails completely turns a simple parts swap into an emergency shop shutdown.

Cable and Solenoid-Based Lock Releases

Some newer lifts, and most four-post and mobile column lifts, use a solenoid or air-actuated release instead of a manual cable. When these fail, the symptom looks electrical rather than mechanical — the lock simply never gets the signal to disengage, or it releases randomly with no input. Start by checking the wiring harness for chafing near moving parts, and verify the solenoid is getting full voltage when the release button is pressed. A solenoid that hums but doesn’t actuate is usually seized or has a failed coil, both of which are straightforward parts swaps.

Air-line releases on mobile column and some scissor systems fail for a different reason — a leaking fitting or cracked line that never builds enough pressure to lift the pawl. When to Call a Professional Instead of DIYing It

We’re not going to tell you every lock issue requires a service call — plenty of Iowa shop owners handle cable adjustments and lubrication themselves, and that’s fine. But there’s a clear line: if the lock isn’t engaging at all, if you can’t identify why one side locks and the other doesn’t, or if you’re looking at a bent pawl or cracked bracket, that’s a call-a-tech situation. Vehicle lifts hold multi-thousand-pound loads over a technician’s head, and a misdiagnosed safety lock is not the place to guess.
