Start With What You Actually Lift

Before you look at a single spec sheet, be honest about the vehicles you service today and the ones you’ll likely see in five years. A shop running mostly sedans and light trucks can get by with a 9,000 lb lift, but if you’re seeing 3/4-ton diesel pickups, cargo vans, or the occasional dually, you need to size up to 10,000 or even 12,000 lb capacity. This is the single most common mistake we run into when choosing a 2 post car lift for a general repair bay in Iowa: buying to the average vehicle instead of the heaviest one that will realistically pull in.

We also ask shop owners about weight distribution, not just gross weight. A lifted truck with a winch bumper carries more weight forward than the rating chart assumes, and that changes how the lift arms need to be positioned. Most 2 post lifts require a minimum of four inches of properly cured concrete, and older Iowa shop floors — especially in buildings put up decades ago — sometimes fall short or have cracks that won’t hold anchors reliably. We test floors as part of every install because a lift is only as strong as what it’s bolted into, no matter how good the equipment itself is.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arm Design

This is where choosing a 2 post car lift gets technical, and it’s worth understanding before you compare quotes. Symmetric lifts center the vehicle directly between the columns, which is simple and works well for trucks, vans, and anything with even front-to-rear weight. Asymmetric lifts offset the columns so the front arms swing out further, giving you more clearance to open doors and easier access for door-heavy alignment or detail work on cars.

Most general repair shops we work with end up choosing asymmetric designs because they offer better door clearance in tighter bays and make it easier to walk around a raised vehicle. But if your bay is wide open and you’re mostly lifting trucks or fleet vehicles, symmetric can be the simpler, sturdier choice. Neither is universally better — it depends on your bay layout and the mix of vehicles you actually service day to day.

Two-Stage vs Three-Stage Arms

Arm reach matters as much as arm strength. Two-stage arms extend in two sections and work fine for cars and light trucks with straightforward frame pickup points. Three-stage arms extend further and are built for shops that regularly lift longer wheelbase trucks, extended vans, or vehicles where the factory lift points sit farther from the columns than a standard car. If your bay sees a mix of small cars and full-size trucks on the same day, three-stage arms give you the flexibility to handle both without repositioning problems.

We’ve had Iowa shop owners try to save money on two-stage arms only to find they can’t get proper pad placement under longer trucks, which forces awkward lifting angles and slows down every job. When choosing a 2 post car lift for a bay with varied vehicle sizes, spend the extra money on three-stage arms — it pays for itself the first week you avoid a lift that won’t reach.

Overhead vs Low-Overhead Configuration

Overhead-style 2 post lifts run a crossbar or cable system above the vehicle, which is a proven, durable design but demands more ceiling height. Low-overhead lifts route the mechanism differently so they fit in buildings with shorter ceilings, which is common in older Iowa shops and detached home garages built before lifts were as popular as they are now. The tradeoff is usually a slightly higher price point for the low-overhead version because of the added engineering.

If you’re building a new shop from scratch, we generally recommend planning ceiling height around a standard overhead lift since it’s simpler and often more cost-effective long term. But if you’re retrofitting an existing structure and can’t add height, a low-overhead configuration solves the problem without sacrificing lifting capacity. This is exactly the kind of decision we walk through on-site, since photos and a tape measure only tell part of the story.

Hydraulic Power Unit and Cable or Chain System

The power unit and the lifting mechanism underneath the paint don’t get much attention in sales brochures, but they determine how long your lift lasts. Cheaper import lifts often use thinner cable and lower-grade hydraulic components that wear faster in daily commercial use, even if the sticker price looks appealing.
