Before we even talk brands or lift types, we measure ceiling height. This is the single most common reason a homeowner’s plan falls apart. A two-post lift with a vehicle raised to working height needs real clearance above it, and a lot of Iowa garages built in the 1990s and early 2000s simply don’t have it. We’ve had customers set their heart on a particular two-post model only to find out a 7-foot ceiling forces them into a mid-rise or low-rise scissor lift instead.

Ceiling height also interacts with your overhead door track, garage door opener rails, and any HVAC ductwork or light fixtures near the lift columns. When we do an in-person or photo-based site assessment, ceiling height is item one on the list, before capacity, before floor thickness, before anything else. Match Capacity to What You Actually Drive

Capacity is where we see the most under-buying. A lot of homeowners assume a 9,000-lb lift is plenty because their sedan weighs half that. But if there’s any chance a full-size pickup, a work van, or a diesel dually parks in that garage in the next ten years, we push people toward more capacity now rather than replacing a lift later. Iowa garages tend to hold onto trucks, trailers, and farm equipment longer than most, and the lift should be sized for the heaviest thing that will ever sit on it, not the average.

We also factor in accessories: toolboxes, bed liners, snowplow mounts, and aftermarket bumpers all add weight that isn’t on the factory spec sheet. When homeowners come to us undecided between two capacity tiers, we almost always recommend rounding up. The cost difference between a 9,000-lb and 12,000-lb lift is modest compared to the cost of swapping out an undersized lift two years down the road.

Two-Post, Four-Post, or Scissor: Pick the Right Type

Choosing a car lift for your garage also means choosing the right lift type for how you’ll actually use it. Two-post lifts are the workhorse choice for anyone doing brake jobs, suspension work, or oil changes, because the arms give you full access underneath the vehicle. Four-post lifts are better for storage, detailing, or long-term parking, since the vehicle sits on runways rather than swing arms, and they’re more forgiving of an imperfect slab.

Scissor and mid-rise lifts are the answer for shorter ceilings or garages where floor anchoring into a thin or cracked slab is a concern. Your Slab Has to Be Ready, Not Just Present

A concrete floor that looks fine to the eye can still be too thin, too new, or too cracked to anchor a two-post or four-post lift safely. Most lift manufacturers specify a minimum slab thickness, usually around four inches of properly cured concrete, and anchor bolts need a clean bite into that slab without hitting rebar or old fill. We’ve walked into more than one Iowa garage where the homeowner already had the lift ordered before anyone checked the floor.

If your slab is questionable, that doesn’t rule out a lift, it just changes the options. A four-post lift with runways or a mobile column setup can work around a marginal floor in ways a bolted two-post cannot. Power, Space, and Clearance Around the Lift

Most home-garage lifts run on standard 220-volt single-phase power, but not every older Iowa garage has that circuit already run to the bay. We factor electrical work into the overall project scope so there are no surprises on install day. Beyond power, you need enough side-to-side and front-to-back clearance for the vehicle doors to open fully once it’s raised, plus room to walk around comfortably while working underneath.

We also look at column placement relative to workbenches, tool chests, and parking for a second vehicle. A lift that technically fits on paper can still feel cramped in daily use if the columns land in the wrong spot relative to your door swing or a support post. Sketching your garage to scale before ordering anything saves a lot of headaches later.

Installation Quality Matters as Much as the Lift Itself

A well-built lift installed poorly is still a poor result. Anchor torque, leveling, cable or hydraulic line routing, and proper safety lock testing all need to be done to spec, every time.
