Choosing a home garage lift is the part of the project most people rush, and it’s the part that decides whether you love the thing for twenty years or fight it for two. Every week somebody calls us after they’ve already clicked “buy” on a lift that won’t clear their garage door opener, won’t sit on their four-inch slab, or won’t fit around the truss chords they forgot to measure. This guide is the conversation we’d rather have with you first — the measurements, the trade-offs, and the honest answers about what your specific garage will actually support.

Start With A Tape Measure, Not A Product Page

The first thing we ask on the phone is height — and not the number on your builder’s plan. We want the actual measurement from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction over the bay where the lift will go. That’s usually not the ceiling. It’s a garage door opener rail, a shop light, an HVAC trunk, or the bottom chord of a truss. On a lot of Iowa homes built in the last thirty years, nominal nine-foot garages measure out to eight-foot-six of usable clearance once the opener is in the picture, and that single detail eliminates half the two-post lifts on the market.

Then measure the bay width between obstructions, the depth from the closed door to the back wall, and where your door tracks run. Two-post lifts need roughly twelve feet of width for the columns plus room to open car doors. Four-post lifts are wider still and need runway length for the ramps. Write all of it down, including the door opener model and how low the rail hangs at its lowest point. When people send us those five numbers before choosing a home garage lift, the rest of the decision usually takes ten minutes. When they don’t, we end up doing a site visit to explain why the crate in their driveway needs to go back.

Two-Post Or Four-Post: Be Honest About Why You Want It

This is the fork in the road, and the right answer comes from how you’ll actually use the bay. If you’re doing brake jobs, suspension work, exhaust, and anything that requires wheels-free access, a two-post lift is the tool. Nothing beats standing under a car with all four wheels hanging. Two-post lifts also use less floor space when the arms are swung in, so the bay stays usable for other things.

If the honest answer is “I want to park the Camaro over the pickup all winter,” a four-post is the better buy. It’s drive-on, it’s forgiving of imperfect concrete because the load spreads across four posts, it doesn’t require anchoring in most residential installs, and with caster kits you can roll it to a different spot in the shop. The trade-off is that the runways block the middle of the vehicle, so wheel and brake work means adding rolling jack trays. We’ve walked hundreds of Iowa homeowners through this and the pattern holds: hobby mechanics want two-post, collectors and storage-first buyers want four-post, and the folks who want both usually end up with a four-post plus a mid-rise scissor. Concrete Is The Part Nobody Wants To Hear About

A two-post lift transfers its entire load into anchors set in your slab. Manufacturers generally want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many 10,000 lb units want more than that. The problem in Iowa is that residential garage slabs get poured fast, sometimes thin at the edges, and often with control joints or radiant tubing exactly where the columns want to sit. We’ve cored slabs in Story and Boone counties that measured three and a half inches when the plans said four.

You have options if the concrete isn’t right. We can cut and pour footing pads under each column, which is a day of work and a week of cure but permanent. Or you go four-post, which spreads the load and dodges the anchoring question entirely for most residential setups. What you should not do is anchor a two-post into questionable concrete and hope. When we’re helping someone with choosing a home garage lift and the slab is unknown, we recommend a core sample before the lift ships — it’s cheap insurance compared to tearing out a floor later. Radiant heat is the other landmine: if you’ve got PEX in the slab, we need to locate it before a single hole gets drilled.

Capacity: Buy For The Heaviest Thing You’ll Own

Nine-thousand-pound lifts handle most cars and half-tons. But a crew-cab three-quarter-ton diesel with a topper and a full tank is realistically pushing 8,500 to 9,200 pounds, and that doesn’t leave margin. Ten thousand pounds is the sweet spot for most Iowa home shops because so many of us have a pickup in the mix. Twelve thousand shows up when there’s a dually, a van conversion, or a loaded trailer tongue in the plan.

Capacity isn’t only about the number on the label, either. Arm reach matters — a long-wheelbase truck needs arms that extend far enough to reach the correct lift points without asymmetric loading, and a low sports car needs arms that go low and short enough to slide under a rocker. Width matters, too: some 10,000 lb two-post models have a clear-floor spread that a dually mirrors-out truck simply will not fit between. Buying one tier up costs a modest amount more at purchase and removes a decade of second-guessing.

Power, Air, And The Stuff That Gets Forgotten

Most home lifts ship configured for 220V single-phase, and most attached garages don’t have a 220V circuit sitting near the corner where the power unit goes. Budget for an electrician. We’ve had projects stall a month because the lift arrived Tuesday and the panel work wasn’t scheduled until the following month. Some units run on 110V, which is convenient but slower and harder on the motor with heavy loads — fine for a storage-focused four-post, less ideal for a two-post you’ll cycle several times a day.

Four-post lifts also want shop air, or at least a small compressor, for the air-release locks on many models. If your garage has no air line, plan a tap or a portable tank. Then there’s drainage and drips — a car parked up top will leak onto whatever is underneath, so consider drip trays if you’re stacking a project car over a daily driver. Lighting is the last one: once a vehicle is six feet up, your ceiling fixtures are shining on the roof, not the underside. Add a couple of wall-mounted LEDs or an underhood light before you need them. None of this is expensive, but all of it is easier to handle during choosing a home garage lift than after the crate lands.

Installation: What We Do, And What You Can Do Yourself

Plenty of people install their own four-post. It’s a drive-on assembly, the cables and hoses are labeled, and two capable people with a rented forklift or engine hoist can get it standing in a Saturday. What we’d push back on is a DIY two-post install where anchoring, plumb, and shimming all have to be right — that’s the one where a small error becomes a safety problem under load.

Where To Start If You’re Still Undecided

Here’s the short version of everything above. Measure your lowest obstruction, your bay width, and your bay depth. Find out what your slab actually is. Decide whether wheels-free service or vehicle storage matters more. Then size capacity for the heaviest vehicle you’ll own in the next ten years, not the one in the driveway today. Those four answers narrow the field to two or three models, and at that point choosing a home garage lift stops being overwhelming.
