Two-Post vs Four-Post for Heavy Trucks

Two-post lifts work well for heavy duty trucks when the frame has solid, accessible lift points, and they’re the better choice when you need full underbody access for driveline, exhaust, or suspension work. But heavy trucks often have frame rails and cross-members in different spots than passenger vehicles, so arm reach and adapter height become critical — we spec taller, heavier-duty arms and truck adapters on nearly every commercial 2-post install we do for fleet accounts.

Four-post lifts, on the other hand, are the default choice for a lot of Iowa fleet shops because trucks simply drive on and there’s no risk of missing a lift point. They’re also better for storage, alignment work with the right runway option, and rolling jacks underneath for brake or suspension jobs. When choosing a lift for heavy duty trucks that come in with varied wheelbases — service trucks, box trucks, occasionally a tractor — a four-post with adjustable runways gives you far more flexibility than trying to match arm positions on a two-post every time.

Lift Height and Ceiling Clearance

Heavy trucks are tall to start with, and once you lift a dually or a box truck several feet in the air, ceiling clearance becomes a real constraint that a lot of shops don’t think about until the lift is already ordered. We measure ceiling height, obstructions like ductwork and lighting, and door header height before recommending a rise height, because a lift that can’t reach full travel in your building is a wasted purchase.

Overall lift height matters just as much for technicians as it does for clearance. A lift that only gets a truck’s frame to chest height might be fine for a quick brake job but frustrating for a full underbody inspection or exhaust replacement. We generally recommend planning for a comfortable working height under the heaviest truck you service, and choosing a four-post or in-ground lift with enough travel to get there without technicians hunching or working on their knees for hours at a time.

Runway Length and Wheelbase Range

Fleet and heavy-duty shops rarely service just one type of truck, and runway length is where a lot of lifts fall short for mixed fleets. A lift sized for a standard pickup wheelbase can leave a longer service truck or box truck with its rear wheels hanging off the back of the runway, which is both unsafe and useless for the job at hand. When choosing a lift for heavy duty trucks that vary in length, we spec extended runways or adjustable-length platforms so the widest range of vehicles in your fleet actually fits.

This is also where in-ground lifts and mobile column lift sets earn their keep. Mobile columns, used in sets of four, six, or eight, can lift almost any wheelbase because there’s no fixed runway at all — you position the columns under the actual axles. Floor and Anchoring Requirements

Heavy duty truck lifts put far more load into the concrete than a standard two-post car lift, and this is the part of the decision that gets overlooked until an install crew shows up and finds the slab won’t pass. We require a core sample or documented slab thickness and PSI rating before quoting a heavy-duty two-post or in-ground installation, because anchoring a 25,000+ lb lift into thin or cracked concrete is a liability nobody should accept.

If your existing slab won’t support the anchoring requirements, that doesn’t necessarily rule out a heavy-duty lift — it usually means either a four-post surface-mount unit, which spreads load differently, or a concrete upgrade in the install area.
