A good commercial lift installation checklist is the difference between a Tuesday install and a three-week nightmare of return trips, core-drill surprises, and an electrician who shows up to find the disconnect on the wrong wall. What follows is the working checklist our crews run through before a truck ever gets loaded, laid out so you can use it on your own project.

Start With the Slab, Not the Lift
Concrete is the first line on every commercial lift installation checklist we write, because it is the one item you cannot fix with a phone call. Most two-post lifts in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb class want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and plenty of manufacturers now spec more than that. Heavier equipment — 15,000 lb and up, or four-post alignment racks — commonly calls for six inches or better, sometimes with a defined footing pad. The number in the manual is a minimum, not a target, and it assumes the concrete is in good condition all the way down.
We core-test when there is any doubt. Older Iowa shops built in the fifties and sixties often have slabs that were poured in sections, patched around old inground lifts, or topped with a thin skim coat that measures fine with a tape but crumbles under an anchor. Cracks within a foot of a proposed anchor location are a red flag. Expansion joints running through a column footprint are worse. If the slab does not pass, the answer is usually a saw-cut and repour of a pad sized to the manufacturer’s spec — a day of work and a cure window, but far cheaper than pulling a loaded lift out of failing concrete later. Get this settled before you order anything.
Ceiling Height, Clear Height, and the Obstruction Map
Everybody measures floor to joist. Fewer people measure floor to the bottom of the light fixture, the sprinkler head, the overhead door track, the radiant tube heater, or the air line that got run at ten feet because it was convenient at the time. Overhead clearance on a two-post with a top-mounted crossbar is set by the crossbar, not by the lift columns, and the vehicle you raise has to clear everything above it. A crew-cab pickup on full rise eats ceiling fast.
So the clearance section of our commercial lift installation checklist asks for three numbers: absolute clear height, lowest obstruction height in the bay, and swing clearance for the overhead door in its open position. Doors are the sneaky one. A sectional door panel rides back along the ceiling when open, and we have seen it stop dead against a freshly installed crossbar. If your building will not give you the height, that is not the end of the project — a floorplate two-post moves the crossbar and hydraulic lines to the ground, and a four-post or a mid-rise scissor changes the geometry entirely. Just decide before the equipment ships, because swapping configurations after delivery means freight both directions.
Power, Disconnects, and the Electrician Conversation
Lifts ship with a power unit, not with wire. Standard commercial two-post units are typically 208-230V single phase, though three-phase is common on heavier equipment and on some four-post and column setups. Confirm the voltage and phase on the specific model you ordered — not the model you looked at last year — then confirm what your panel actually has available and whether there is spare capacity on it.
The second half of that conversation is placement. Code and the manufacturer both want a lockable disconnect within sight of the operator position, and the power unit lands on a specific column depending on how you orient the lift. We ask shops to hold the final electrical rough-in until we have marked column locations on the floor, because a disconnect installed on the assumption of a left-hand power side becomes an expensive conduit rerun. On air-operated safety releases, add a shop air drop near the same column. Your electrician is not being difficult when they ask for details; they are asking for the details this part of the checklist exists to produce. Bay Layout, Anchor Spacing, and Traffic Flow
We chalk the floor before we drill. Every column footprint, every anchor hole, the drive-through path, and the door swing all get marked and then walked by whoever runs the shop. It takes twenty minutes and it catches things a drawing never does: the tech who cannot open a toolbox drawer, the parts cart that no longer fits between bays, the trash can that has lived in the same corner for fifteen years.
Spacing between adjacent lifts matters more than most layouts assume. You need room for open vehicle doors on both sides, room to walk a transmission jack in, and enough gap that a raised truck’s mirrors are not living inside the next bay. Anchor edge distance is a hard constraint too — anchors placed too close to a slab edge, a floor drain, a trench, or an old inground lift cavity will not develop full holding strength no matter how well you torque them. Floor drains in particular tend to sit right where a column wants to go in older Iowa buildings, and moving a drain is a plumbing job with a permit attached. Delivery, Rigging, and Getting the Columns Inside
Freight arrives on a semi. A two-post lift crate is heavy, awkward, and it is not going to move itself off the trailer. Before we schedule delivery, we confirm truck access to the building, whether there is a dock or a lift gate, and what equipment is on site to move columns — a forklift with adequate capacity, or a plan to rig the columns off the trailer and walk them in.
We also confirm the doorway. Column height versus door header, crate width versus the man door somebody assumed would work, and the turning radius inside the shop all belong on the list. On tight jobs we have unpacked crates on the apron and carried components in piece by piece, which works fine as long as it was planned instead of discovered. Inspect the shipment against the packing list before the driver leaves, and photograph any damaged crating. A bent carriage arm or a crushed hydraulic line found on day one is a warranty claim; the same part found on day three during assembly turns into a delay while we chase a replacement. Small step, big payoff.
Commissioning: The Part of the Commercial Lift Installation Checklist Nobody Skips Twice
Assembly is not the finish line. Once the columns are anchored and plumb, we torque every anchor to the manufacturer’s spec with a calibrated wrench and record it. We bleed the hydraulics, cycle the lift through full travel several times unloaded, verify both carriages rise and lower evenly, and confirm the equalization system holds. Then we set the safety locks, listen for them engaging at every position, and test the manual release.
After that comes a loaded test. We put a vehicle on it, raise it, lower it onto locks, and check for drift over time. We verify the overhead shutoff, the pinch-point guards, the arm restraints, and that every decal and capacity placard is in place and legible — that last one is what an inspector looks for first. Finally, we train the crew: correct arm placement, pickup points, what the locks sound like when they are right, and where the disconnect is. Documentation, Inspection, and Handing It Off
The last block of our commercial lift installation checklist is paperwork, and shops that skip it regret it at their first insurance walkthrough. We leave behind the manufacturer’s manual, the serial number and model recorded somewhere other than a sticker on a column, the anchor torque log, and a dated record of the commissioning tests. That packet is what supports a warranty claim, and it is what an ALI-certified inspector wants to see on an annual visit.
We also set the maintenance clock before we leave. Daily visual checks on cables, chains, arm restraints, and hoses. Monthly lubrication and a hardware re-torque in the first weeks of service, since anchors can relax slightly as the assembly settles. Annual third-party inspection, which most insurers and many fleet contracts now require outright. And a note on which wear parts — cables, lock pawls, cylinder seals — we keep on the shelf for that model, so a failure means a phone call and not a week of downtime.
