A good dealership bay layout is the difference between a service department that hums along at capacity and one where technicians are constantly waiting on each other, backing cars around parked lifts, and losing billable hours to bad traffic flow. Start With Vehicle Mix, Not Square Footage
Every dealership bay layout project we take on starts with the same question: what are you actually servicing? A Ford or GM store doing mostly light trucks and SUVs needs a different lift mix than an import store running Civics and Elantras through quick-lube bays. Before we draw a single line on a floor plan, we ask for a rundown of the vehicle mix, the split between express maintenance and heavier repair work, and how many technicians the store expects to staff at build-out. That data drives everything else in the dealership bay layout, including which bays get 2-post lifts, which get 4-post or drive-on alignment lifts, and where scissor lifts make sense for quick tire and oil work.
We also factor in growth. A store that’s adding a certified pre-owned program or expanding its EV service capability in the next few years shouldn’t box itself into a dealership bay layout that only works for today’s volume. We’ve had dealerships call us back eighteen months after an initial install because they under-planned lift count, and retrofitting an occupied service department is always more disruptive and more expensive than getting the bay count right the first time.
Aisle Width and Drive-Through Clearance
One of the most common mistakes we see in a dealership bay layout is undersized aisle width. Technicians need room to maneuver vehicles into position without tapping mirrors on adjacent lift columns, and service advisors need a clear path to walk the shop without dodging raised vehicles. As a rule of thumb, we recommend a minimum aisle width that lets a full-size pickup pass a raised vehicle on an adjacent lift with real clearance on both sides — tighter than that and you’ll see technicians slowing down or avoiding certain bays altogether.
Drive-through capability matters just as much. In-ground lifts and certain 4-post configurations allow a vehicle to be driven straight through the bay rather than backed out, which saves real time across a shift when you multiply it by dozens of vehicles a day. When we plan a dealership bay layout for a high-volume store, we try to orient at least a portion of the bays for drive-through flow, especially in quick-lube and multi-point inspection lanes where speed matters more than in a heavy diagnostic bay.
Lift Placement Relative to Overhead Obstructions
Dealership service departments are full of overhead obstructions that don’t show up on a basic floor plan — HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, lighting fixtures, and sometimes mezzanine storage. We’ve walked into more than one Iowa dealership where a previous contractor placed a 2-post lift directly under a sprinkler head with insufficient clearance for a raised full-size van. Getting the dealership bay layout right means walking the physical space with lift specs in hand, not just working from a CAD drawing.
This is especially critical with 4-post lifts and alignment racks, which have taller overall lift height than a standard 2-post and need more headroom to clear a raised vehicle without triggering fire code violations. We measure twice before a single anchor bolt goes into the slab, because moving a lift six inches after installation because it clips a duct is a conversation nobody wants to have with a service director.
Power, Air, and Utility Runs
A dealership bay layout isn’t just about where lifts sit on the floor — it’s about what’s underneath and around them. Every lift needs power, and many shops also run air lines to each bay for impact guns and tire equipment. When we plan new construction or a remodel, we work with the electrical and plumbing contractors early so utility drops land exactly where the lift columns will sit, instead of technicians running extension cords and air hoses across walkways, which is both a tripping hazard and a productivity drain.
Zoning by Service Type
The best dealership bay layouts group similar work together. Quick-lube and multi-point inspection bays near the front of the shop, closest to the write-up area, keep fast jobs moving without cutting through heavier repair bays. Alignment and 4-post bays typically sit in a dedicated zone since they require more floor space and specialized lift configurations. Heavy diagnostic and warranty repair bays often go toward the back, where a technician might need a vehicle up on a 2-post lift for extended periods without blocking through-traffic. Zoning like this within the dealership bay layout also makes it easier to manage which technicians are assigned where, and it keeps the shop foreman’s line of sight cleaner across the floor.
Lift Type Selection by Bay Function
Not every bay in a dealership needs the same lift. We typically recommend 2-post lifts for general repair bays where technicians need full underbody access, 4-post lifts for alignment and long-term storage bays, and low-rise or scissor lifts for quick tire and brake work where speed of access matters more than full lift height. Getting this mix wrong in a dealership bay layout — for example, putting 2-post lifts in every bay when half the work is quick tire rotations — wastes both floor space and technician time, since a scissor lift can get a vehicle up for tire work far faster than a full 2-post cycle.
