Why Our Eastern Iowa Shop Install Notes Start With the Slab

Every set of eastern Iowa shop install notes we write begins with concrete, because concrete is what fails first. A huge share of the buildings we work in along the I-380 corridor date back thirty, forty, even sixty years, and the original pour was never engineered with a two-post or in-ground lift in mind. We core sample or at minimum probe with a rebar locator before we ever talk anchor bolt spacing, because eastern Iowa freeze-thaw cycles are brutal on older slabs and we’ve seen hairline cracks turn into real structural gaps within a few seasons of lift use.

Ceiling Height and Overhead Obstructions

The second recurring theme is ceiling clearance, particularly in shops that were converted from old implement dealers, gas stations, or small manufacturing buildings. Eastern Iowa has a lot of these repurposed structures, and while the floor space often looks generous, the truss height or HVAC ductwork running through the bay tells a different story. We measure from the finished floor to the lowest hanging obstruction in every bay, not just the peak of the roofline, because sprinkler heads, gas lines, and lighting fixtures routinely sit lower than owners remember.

This matters most for two-post lifts, where a vehicle raised to full height plus the overhead beam and safety mechanism needs real headroom, and for four-post lifts with a rolling jack or alignment rack on top, which adds another foot or more. We’ve had to recommend low-rise or mid-rise scissor lifts instead of full two-post units in a handful of older Iowa City buildings simply because the ceiling wouldn’t allow full extension safely. Better we catch that during the walkthrough than after the concrete is drilled.

Electrical Service and Panel Capacity

Power is the third pillar of every set of notes we take. A lot of shops in this part of the state are still running on service panels sized for lighting and small hand tools, not a 220V three-phase or single-phase hydraulic power unit. We check panel capacity, breaker availability, and run distance from the panel to the intended lift location, because voltage drop over a long run can cause a hydraulic unit to underperform or trip breakers under load.

In quite a few older Dubuque and Quad Cities buildings we’ve found panels that are technically rated high enough on paper but already loaded down with compressors, welders, and lighting circuits, leaving no real headroom. Our recommendation in those cases is almost always to loop in a licensed electrician before install day rather than discover the shortfall when the lift is already bolted down and won’t cycle properly.

Bay Spacing and Traffic Flow

Physical layout is where a lot of Iowa shop owners underestimate what a lift install actually requires. It’s not just the footprint of the lift itself — it’s the swing radius of vehicle doors at full lift height, the clearance needed to walk around a raised vehicle safely, and the space required to pull a car in and out without clipping a neighboring post. We map out full bay spacing during every walkthrough, and it’s a rare shop where the original layout doesn’t need at least minor adjustment.

We’ve reworked plans for shops that wanted two two-post lifts side by side but hadn’t accounted for door swing overlap, and for shops that wanted a four-post lift but needed extra runway length for longer trucks common on Iowa farms and job sites. Getting this right on paper before delivery saves a lot of headache and re-drilling later.
