Why EV Lift Points Are Different From Gas Vehicles

Most gas cars give you generous frame rail contact under the rocker panels, and the drivetrain sits high enough that you rarely worry about clearance. Electric vehicles flip that layout upside down. The battery pack is a flat slab bolted to the underbody, often spanning nearly the entire wheelbase, and it sits low. That means the factory-approved ev lift points are usually narrower, more specific, and less forgiving than what techs are used to.

Manufacturers publish exact ev lift points for a reason — the pack casing is structural but not built to take a concentrated point load from a standard lift pad. Slip even a couple inches off the marked point and you can crack a battery enclosure, pinch a coolant line, or crush a high-voltage cable running along the underbody. Where to Find the Correct Lift Points on Popular EVs

Every EV maker marks factory lift and jack points somewhere in the owner’s manual or on a sticker near the door jamb, and it pays to check both before the vehicle ever goes up. Tesla models use small reinforced pucks along the rocker, and Tesla actually sells rubber lift adapters designed to seat over them so a standard arm pad doesn’t slide or crush the panel. Ford’s F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E have their own marked zones forward and aft of the battery pack, distinct from the standard F-150 frame points techs already know.

Chevy Bolt, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and other crossover-style EVs generally use points closer to a traditional car layout but still avoid the center pack. The rule that holds across every brand: never guess. Pull up the factory diagram, confirm the ev lift points visually against the vehicle, and only then bring the lift up.

Adapters and Accessories That Make EV Lifting Safer

A two-post lift built for a decade-old sedan often has pads spaced and shaped for frame rails, not the narrower, flatter contact zones EVs need. That’s where lift adapters earn their keep. Extended-height rubber blocks, low-profile pucks, and swing-arm extensions let a shop match its existing lift to the specific geometry of each vehicle rather than buying new equipment for every EV that rolls in.

Both lift styles can service EVs correctly, but they come with different tradeoffs. Two-post lifts give techs full underbody access, which matters for battery service, coolant loop work, and drivetrain jobs — but they demand more precision because the arms have to land exactly on the correct points and hold there under load. A tech who’s used to eyeballing frame contact on a Camry needs to slow down and actually measure on an EV.

Four-post lifts and portable rolling jacks trade some underbody access for forgiveness. The vehicle drives up onto full-length runways, so the wheels — not the pack — carry the weight during general lift, alignment, or tire work. For shops doing mostly tire rotations, brake jobs on non-battery components, or general service, that’s often the safer default. Weight and Capacity Considerations for EV Lifting

EVs are heavy. A battery pack alone can weigh several hundred pounds, and a loaded electric pickup can run well past what a shop’s older lift was rated for. Before any EV goes up, confirm the lift’s rated capacity against the vehicle’s actual curb weight, not just its category. Capacity isn’t just about total pounds either — it’s about how that weight distributes across the correct ev lift points.
