The right number depends entirely on what you’re lifting and what clearance the job requires underneath. A brake job on a straight truck needs less overhead clearance than a full driveline inspection on a motorhome chassis. We walk through your actual vehicle mix — tire diameter, frame height, and the specific repair tasks your techs perform daily — before recommending a column height. Guessing on this spec is expensive, because once concrete anchors are set and columns are wired together in a set, swapping to taller units later means redoing the whole installation rather than just adding hardware.
Mobile Columns vs. Fixed Two-Post: Where Extended Height Fits
Extended height lift columns show up most often in wireless mobile column sets, since those systems are built specifically for heavy trucks, buses, and equipment that vary widely in wheelbase and height. A set of four, six, or eight synchronized mobile columns lets you lift a vehicle by its wheels rather than a frame contact point, which matters when you’re dealing with unusual frame geometry on lifted trucks or specialty vehicles.
That said, extended height columns aren’t exclusive to mobile sets — some fixed two-post configurations and heavy-duty in-ground columns also come in taller variants for shops with consistently oversized vehicles. The tradeoff is ceiling clearance. Before you commit to extended height lift columns, we always check your building’s overhead clearance, including HVAC ductwork, sprinkler heads, and lighting fixtures, because a taller lift is only useful if your building can actually accommodate the raised vehicle without contact overhead.
Ceiling Height and Building Constraints
This is the part shops underestimate most often. Extended height lift columns need proportionally more overhead room, and in older Iowa shop buildings with lower trusses or retrofit HVAC runs, that clearance simply isn’t there without modification. We measure floor-to-lowest-obstruction height at every survey visit, not just floor-to-ceiling, because a duct or gas line hanging eighteen inches below the roofline can be the actual limiting factor.
If your building can’t clear a fully extended lift, there are still options — you may not need to raise every vehicle to maximum height for every job, and some column sets allow you to run a partial fleet of extended units alongside standard-height columns for mixed-use bays. We’d rather have this conversation before installation than after a column is bolted down and wired into a set that won’t clear your rafters.
Capacity Still Matters More Than Height
A taller column doesn’t automatically mean a stronger one, and we see shops occasionally conflate the two specs. Extended height lift columns are rated for weight capacity independently of their height — you can find tall columns rated anywhere from light-duty to heavy commercial capacity depending on the model. Match the capacity to your heaviest vehicle first, gross weight and axle distribution included, then confirm the height spec separately.
We size every column set to the worst-case vehicle in your bay, not the average one. A shop that services mostly half-ton trucks but occasionally takes in a medium-duty box truck needs to plan around that occasional heavy vehicle, or risk buying equipment that can’t safely handle the job when it shows up. Extended height lift columns purchased with the wrong capacity rating create a liability regardless of how much reach they offer.
Installation and Concrete Requirements
Taller columns carry the load higher off the ground, which changes the leverage and stress placed on the anchoring points compared to a standard-height unit of the same capacity. We check slab thickness, rebar, and cure age before setting any lift, but this scrutiny matters more with extended height columns because the extra mast length increases the moment force transmitted to the base during operation.
We’ve turned down installations where the existing slab wasn’t rated for the columns being requested, and recommended slab reinforcement or relocation to a different bay instead. It’s a harder conversation, but it’s cheaper than a column base cracking loose months into service.
