Somebody buys a four post lift for alignments, storage, or general service, gets it leveled and running, and then realizes they can’t pull a wheel off without something to lift the axle. That’s what a rolling jack does — it bridges the two runways, slides down the length of the lift, and picks a wheel or an axle off the deck so you can get at brakes, tires, and suspension. What a Rolling Jack Actually Does on a Four Post

A four post lift holds the vehicle by its tires. That’s the whole point — drive on, raise, and the suspension stays loaded. Great for storage, alignments, exhaust work, and undercarriage inspection. Terrible for anything involving the wheels themselves. A rolling jack, sometimes called a sliding jack or bridge jack, solves that. It sits crossways between the two runways, rides on rollers or wheels, and uses a hydraulic ram to raise a pair of lift pads against the frame or pinch welds. Now the tires are off the runway and you have a wheels-free lift.

Most shops we work with in central Iowa run two jacks on a single four post so they can do all four corners without repositioning, or lift front and rear axles at the same time. Home users usually buy one and slide it where they need it. The jack does not add capacity to the lift — it borrows from it. A 14,000 lb four post with a 7,000 lb rolling jack does not become a 21,000 lb machine. The jack’s rating is the most weight it can put on one axle, and the lift’s rating is still the ceiling for the whole vehicle. Fit Comes First: Runway Width and Rail Type

The single most common mistake we see is somebody buying a jack that physically won’t sit on their lift. Rolling jacks are built to a specific runway spacing range and a specific rail profile. Some four posts have a flat top rail the jack wheels ride on. Others have a channel or a J-shaped lip. Some use a separate steel track that bolts to the inside of each runway, and if your lift didn’t ship with those tracks, you need them before a jack will roll.

Before you order, measure three things: the inside-to-inside distance between runways at the narrowest point, the outside-to-outside distance, and the height of the rail surface the jack will ride on. Then find the model tag on your lift. Brand and capacity alone aren’t enough — a manufacturer might have built three runway widths under one model family across twenty years of production. Air-Over-Hydraulic vs. Manual Hydraulic

You’ll see two power options. Air-over-hydraulic jacks use shop air to drive a hydraulic pump — press a lever, the saddle rises, no pumping. They’re fast, they’re what commercial shops want, and they require a compressor with real capacity nearby. Manual hydraulic jacks use a foot pedal or hand pump. Slower, but no air line, no leaks at the fitting, and nothing to freeze up in an unheated Iowa garage in February.

For a busy tire and brake shop doing dozens of wheels-off jobs a day, air-over pays for itself in labor within a season. For a home four post that lifts a project car twice a month, manual is the honest answer and we’ll tell you so. Either style uses the same basic hydraulics: a cylinder, a seal kit, a release valve, and a reservoir that needs the right fluid at the right level. Both fail the same way too — slow drift down under load, usually a tired seal or a dirty release valve. Capacity, Saddles, and Pinch Weld Adapters

Rolling jack capacities generally run from around 4,000 lb for light-duty home units up to 9,000 lb and beyond for commercial applications. Pick based on the heaviest axle you’ll lift, not the vehicle’s total weight. A three-quarter-ton pickup with a loaded bed can put more on one axle than people expect, and half-ton trucks with plows are common in our territory.

The saddles matter as much as the ram. Bare steel pads work on frame rails and solid axles. Unibody cars need pinch weld adapters — slotted rubber or polyurethane blocks that cradle the seam without folding it over. EVs need tall, specific pucks because the battery pack sits low and the factory lift points are non-negotiable. Truck work needs stackable extensions to reach a high frame. We stock these adapters because a jack with the wrong contact point either damages the vehicle or slips, and slipping under load is the failure mode nobody wants to see. Buy the adapter set with the jack. It’s a small line item next to a crushed rocker panel or a bent battery tray, and it turns one jack into something that handles the whole mix of vehicles rolling through the bay.

Installing and Setting Up a New Jack

Most jacks ship mostly assembled. The work is fitting them to the lift and getting the geometry right. Set the lift at a comfortable working height, load the jack onto the runways from the drive-off end, and check that it rolls the full length without binding or dropping into a gap. Then extend it to full width and confirm the roller flanges engage both rails with margin — not right at the edge.

Next comes leveling. If the two runways aren’t parallel and level to each other, a rolling jack will bind, roll hard, or sit crooked under load. Nine times out of ten when a customer calls saying their new jack won’t slide, the actual problem is lift leveling, not the jack. We check runway level with the lift raised, adjust cables or shims as needed, and then the jack rolls with one hand. After that, bleed the hydraulics, cycle the ram several times empty, and verify the saddles rise evenly. Safe Operating Habits That Prevent Damage

Rolling jacks get abused more than any other part of a four post lift. Here’s what we tell every shop we install for. Never position a jack under a vehicle while the lift is moving. Never raise a jack unless both sets of rollers are fully engaged on the rails. Never use the jack to lift the vehicle onto the runways — it’s for wheels-free work only, once the lift is already up and locked on its mechanical safeties.

Watch the load path too. Lift at manufacturer-designated points, keep the saddles centered under the pad, and stop the moment you see the vehicle shift or hear the frame flex. When you’re done, lower the jack completely, roll it out from under the vehicle, and leave it at the end of the runway rather than parked mid-span where somebody drives into it. Keep the deck clean — grit in the roller path is what wears flanges out, and in Iowa that means road salt and gravel dust half the year. A five-minute sweep and a wipe of the rails after every wheels-off job does more for jack life than anything else.
